Despite all the hubaloo the Parliament makes about supporting the troops and supporting the vets and whatnot, Remembrance Day is still not a national holiday.
Yet we have holidays like Civic Holiday, or Victoria Day which serves no purpose other than a day off to get drunk.
Let's petition for a holiday that is worth a good reason :) |

I agree totally. It is a holiday here in Alberta for many people though. I don't remember it being like that in ontario though. |

Although I agree that yes it should be a national holiday.....reality is....it will be just another day off to get drunk....for those who already do that on other holidays. |

true
but im saying that why should some ppl have the holiday and some not?
i dont see how a teller at a bank is more deserving of it than a cashier at a store? |

I'll have to say no to this. As much as I think it should be I also think people will just forget what it's for and get drunk or go shopping ro something. At least the way it is now kids are in school and having some sort of ceremony. Give them a day off and they'll play video games. |

I believe every province in Canada has the day off except in Quebec and in Ontario. |

I don't know if it should be a statutory holiday actually.
If it were, then people would treat it as they do all the other ones; an excuse to party, go away on vacation, be lazy, etc. They would forget the true meaning of why it's called Remembrance Day (which is already becoming far too apparent among the younger generations).
For example, Victoria Day Weekend is referred to mostly as "May 2/4". |

That's the point. Why is Victoria Day even a holiday? It is not nearly as important as Rememberance Day. |

So everyone can get their gardening done for the summer, and another reason to blow off some fireworks. |

It was a very important holiday in the 19th Century and into the 1950s when this country was still proud of its British ancestry. Victoria Day weekend has come to symbolise that part of our history and to say it's not an important holiday would be ignorant.
But what has happened to Victoria Day Weekend will surely happen to Remembrance Day in a few decades if it's made a statutory holiday. |
