Mac OS X: How to stream audio to a shoutcast server?
View this Thread in Original format

Alright Mac users, I have a couple questions...

First: What is the best (and hopefully free) software to use to stream audio? I.e. if I want to stream a live set to a server for people to listen to, what should I use?

Second: Is there any way I can set up a shoutcast server easily on my own domain, or is that just a whole pain in the ass?

I really know nothing of this sort of stuff, so any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

Basic software is the SHOUTcast broadcast DSP Plug-In for Mac Os X which is command line only with no GUi.

Concerning using your web server it'll depend on what platform it's running on ( Windows, Linux ) and if you can do remote desktopping to install it that would be great.

I don't even understand what that means :(

he's saying

SHOUTcast the program to stream music over the net is a DSP plugin (Winamp Plugin) which can only be configured and used through Command Line and not a GUI (graphical user interface) for Mac OSX.

I believe you'll need to edit a config file within the shoutcast folder, then run winamp which you can use to load SHOUTcast plugin in order to be able to stream over the net.

Yikes.

I thought there was a much simpler way to deal with this. I streamed a set to UKTA Radio a few months ago and all I needed was a program... :wtf:

i would hope there is something out there that can afford such capabilities at this point. I remember doing shoutcast from my parents place back in 2001. Actually I might have shouted with jdat at one point or another, those days are long gone, but I do remember the shoutcast process being laborious and tiresome, often preluded by dropped listeners and the whole 9. Wasn't the greatest software to use but it was the only one of its kind at the time.

I'm sure there HAS to be some new software out there that'll do the same as above.

RJT - how do you like your mac? I just ordered a macbook 13.3 black, I might need to plug you on some PC-type of tools and diagnostic processes if that's alright.

Do you want to host the show and have people connect to you to listen? or do you want a server you connect onto, then people connect to the server to listen?

I would recommend the latter, although if you carry a fast enough speed the former might be better. You can google for servers that provide shoutcast hosting. They can get somewhat expensive. Most web server companies (like what you would host yoru website on) do not allow you to run a shoutcast server mainly because you have to open up ports on the server and its bad to have ports open :p

when I get home I think I bookmarked my fav broadcast sites, but ask around, I know some people aroudn here have put shoutcast servers on their own webserver and you might be able to leech onto that.

other than the server, you just download the plugin for winamp, enter the server information on a .txt(ish) file (if there is no gui), and play away.

did I confuzzle you>

oh hell no, you mean i have to actually use itunes? god kill me now

i heard something called garage band or some sort of jukebox crap.

Don't know if this helps in any way, but have you looked at Audion?
If I remember well it was THE audioplayer a couple of years ago for the Mac, until iTunes 'killed' it.
Not been developed or supported anymore, but free nonetheless.
On their websites it says it does shoutcast. Can't hurt to give it a spin.
Then setup a server or ask someone maybe with a shoutcast server?
Just follow the instructions on shoutcast.com and all should come together.
Anyway, have a look here:

Good luck! :)
