I just wanted to comment on the DJ 100 poll for 2007.
(pre-rant) Now I know these rankings amount to nothing more than a popularity contest. But for some of the lesser known music genres and artists, they are indicative of the changing tides of people takes in music. And while the top 10 has your candy-coated staples like Van Buuren and Tiesto, they do also have the likes of (excuse me while I genre hop) such talented musicians as Cox and Digweed - whom I have alot of respect for and go to see when I can. This is a statement that the poll as a whole is not a sham. So I do lend some credibility to it.
Something of note this year is the creeping up in the rankings of artists who represent the psy-trance genre. Now in me stating IM is psy will warrant IM bashing posts of how they are not indicative of what true psy is. But the fact of the matter is they do repesent an entry point into the genre for many - me included. Their style on the Top 100 site is even stated as "An electrifying fusion of heavy rock and stadium psy-trance." Sellouts? Perhaps. But they do deliver at least a taste of psy whenever they do play...and they definitely deliver an engulfing vibe that you get at any other good psy party. So if people are supporting them, I do consider them at least supporting half-heartedly the psy-trance genre.
Something else of note is some other psy artists making some moves on this poll. Noteably, Astrix at 18 (up 23 spots). And if anyone states Astrix aren't psy, we aren't on the same level in describing this genre.
What an I saying with this post? As much as I don't want psy-trance to become too popular, I would like to see it get more recognition as a very sophisticated form of music that deserves respect. And it seems to be happening as the internet allows for the proliferation of sub-genres of music like psy-trance.
(a disturbing occurance is how JOOF is dropping in these polls. Nonetheless, he's gotten over the results of last year and his fans still support him regardless - without a doubt me included.) |
