| Oh man, I can't take ephedrine. That makes me ON EDGE in the worst way. Like, seriously aggressive and/or angry, lol. They make me feel anxious like the first couple times you did E...that horrible jerky/shaky/stomach in knots/wishing you'd only done a half feeling. Ugh! |

hahaha, that's weird. i have no problem with it.
i'm such a pill-junkie though... anytime i get sick i just try to keep myself doped up 24/7 so that i forget i'm even sick. |

Oh? Are you a doctor/nurse/pharamcologist?
We crush meds all the time in the nursing home, and as far as I know, it's perfectly fine. Going back to what I learned in pharmacology and in my medication administration unit...it doesn't change the way the pills are absorbed. They go to the stomach all the same, if they're to be taken PO (by mouth).
You wouldn't want to crush pills that are to be taken sublingually, or rectally, or some other such way...because the body absorbs them differently, and they are broken down differently depending on the route of entry.
It might change the RATE of absorption, but that doesn't cause adverse effects. |

Some medicines are fine, but some pills shouldn't be crushed at all... I mean, if you crush a tablet and dissolve it in water and swallow it, it's already dissolved... as opposed to having the process of dissolution as a tablet... so theoretically it'll have a quicker effect... although admittedly this entirely depends on so many factors like dissolution rates, and I'd think it's minimal.
But the main medicines are those that are modified release... these are made to go specific parts of the body, or to avoid certain regions... eg's of the top of my head; medicines for irritable bowel syndrome have to pass the stomach unchanged, erythromycin has a special coating to prevent it from being dissolved in the stomach, alendronate has a special coating because it has the potential to cause mal-effects on the throat etc...
Other as well but u get the point. I'm sure your head nurse has specific instructions and possibly doesn't deal w/ medicines like I mentioned? or u guys r dodge! :P |

Hahahaha..no we know what we're doing. Obviously Myra isn't taking pills that have THAT specific of instructions, so I think it's ok for her to crush them.
But yeah, I hear what you're saying. However, there are always exceptions to the "rules".
;)
I'm taking pharmacology again next semester, so I'll know a lot better then. :D |
