Why do trance songs have to be "about" anything?

I mean, really. If the lyrics were dropped, it would only be a good thing.

Concentrate on the music alone, make it a bit more complex and indecipherable, not so obvious. Don't beat everybody over the head with a "huge lead OMG" and "threeminutebreakdownhandsintheair." Strip that "arena pop" sensibility away.

And please, please, please stop it with the "rockstar DJ" thing.

Just one man's opinion.

How original.

Not so much, just that the "Anthem Song" thread got me thinking about this.

i prefer trance tunes without vocals, focuses on the melody and composition rather than being commercially cheap and getting some woman to sing the melody.

i have to agree with this.:)

balance... the vocals shouldn't dominate the instrumentation...

ive listened to many songs thinking, "wow great song!" then the vocals come in and the song instantly is deleted.

but not always, sometimes the vocals are very good and it enhances the song.

i usually prefer no vocals at all though.

i prefer vocals, they can really make a song go from being "good" to ing awesome alot of the time....they can just as easily ruin a track though. but when it comes to the best tracks with vocals vs the best tracks without them, the vocal tracks would win every time :p but really if a track is good who ing cares

Most of the songs with great vocals or vocal samples I remember over the classic instrumentals. Theres no real point comparing apples to oranges, you've either got a good song with vocals or a crap one with vocals and the same goes for instrumental work

ya, well said

If there's an option of vocal mix or instru mix I always tend to go for the instrumental. Vocals can make trance really cheesy - though obviously there's some notable exceptions, but your typical generic female singing lyrics just doesn't add a thing for me.

Think I've only ever bought 4 vocal tracks:

A Force - Behind Silence
Team SR - Leaving London
Ronald van Gelderen - This Way
Young Parisians - Jump The Nex Train

Having slated vocal tracks I admit I still have a slight soft spot for Freefall "Skydive", one of the first trance tracks I heard :)
