I proper lol'd.
Canada doesn't have a history, b/c majority of its people do not want to learn about it. It's not because Canada doesn't have a history worth learning about, but it's just that what gets taught at least up to high school (and even in university level) is full of stuff like glorifying Louis Riel, deporting Japanese Canadians to Prairies, how the Europeans killed off the Natives, etc.
Sure, they are important to know and understand so that the future generation do not make the same mistake, but it's also important to know the Canadian heroes and how much Canada kicked ass from time to time and how Canada did important stuff once in a while.
Honestly, would you want to learn about the bad stuff Canada did? If you are an immigrant to Canada, would you feel proud to be Canadian and accept the Canadian identity as your own?
Not to mention that since education is a provincial responsibility, every province sets different standard and teaches different subjects. I'm sure Quebec would teach a lot about Quebec history and not Canada in general (other than fact that how much Anglos are screwing Quebec over:p). Newfies probably talk about how much they get drunk and how screech is good.
Hard for people to see commonality with others all over Canada when they do not know the history of Canada.
Right. Now where is that damn poutine! (It's a sad thing when the best poutine you can get in Ontario is at a KFC) |
