I hate auto repair places.

I take my Focus in to get new tires put on it since that was my major Christmas present. My car has been driving fine, especially after recently having the alignment fixed. After taking it in to get the tires replaced they call me back and say I need new front rotors and pads totaling $279. Mind you, the car only has 37,000 miles on it (I got it at 33,800 back in August), and I don't really ever drive it that far or hard. I called bs on their assessment and their cliché "this is a saftey hazard issue" and plan to take my car to the dealership and see what they say.

The shop I use is borderline hole in the wall, and off all of the main roads. Not only is it cheap, but the service is ing great. They rock.

There is absolutely no reason you should need new rotors at 37,000 miles... :wtf:

Well the one hole in the wall repair place I used to go to charged me $730 for an entire brake overhaul. This meant rotors, calipers, pads, tubes, and the whole nine plus the service fee. Not to mention, they bought the wrong part and charged me an extra $50 for it but said they wouldn't charge me for the service. After getting all of that done I asked some of my car savvy friends and they said that a complete brake overhaul should cost no more than $350.

unless the brakes have never been serviced during the entire life of the car and the rotors are too thin or have grooves in them... but they could probably be resurfaced rather than replaced.

brakes usually last 30-40k miles, depending on how you drive.

they're saying have a 3mm groove in my rotors. :o

The thing that got me was that they used the cliché phrase "this is a saftey issue" which really made me tilt my head at the situation. Besides the fact that my father has had a few run-ins with Kaufman Tires saying that he needs all these extra repairs done to his car when in all actuality his car was just fine. I'm highly skeptical, nor do I have an extra $279 to spend. With Christmas under my belt and a few birthdays coupled with a car payment, a phone payment, and some insurance, I just don't have the money for the rotors and pads. If I can eke another month or two on what I have and get a few more paychecks, then I may be more inclined to get the repairs done that they say need done.

don't do it. brakes :p

Pads and rotors are a fairly simple job and swapping out calipers is as simple as bolting on a part while youre in there.

Save the cash and do it yourself....what sort of car is this?

2003 Ford Focus SE. I wouldn't do the repairs myself since I don't know dick about cars, but I have a few friends that know a shload and how to repair them, so I'm more partial to going that route.

Bingo. The one thing I'm even remotely familiar with when it comes to cars is brake rotors - And honestly, unless the person who had the car before Ted beat the living piss out of it, they should only need to be resurfaced, definitely not replaced.

The first time the brake rotors were replaced in my Camry was at 120,000 miles, they had been ground down either two or three times prior.

you're probably better off taking care of it sooner than later. in my experience, the longer you wait to get repairs or service done on your car, the more you're gonna have to shell out. i'm not sure if 3mm is too much for the rotor to be resurfaced, but if you wait any longer it's definitely going to need to be replaced, and it might do more damage to the braking system.

if you're worried about spending the money, take it to another place for a second opinion and price quote. i've always had my brakes done at Midas and i never had any problems there, and since they have lifetime guarantee on brake pads you'll never end up paying for pads again for as long as you own the car.

i feel your pain though. i'm about due for a brake service myself, and not looking forward to paying for it. :\
