another thing to consider is what might happen if an 8000-pound suv t-bones you, in which case i think the civic has the edge.

the yaris would be the easiest to see, drive and park in, old people tend to like small cars for that reason.

I bought a (used) 2005 Toyota Corolla LE back in May and I love it for the great deal I got it. Had 14,000 miles, one owner, was cleane through CarFax, and came with a 7 year, 100,000 mile power-train warantee.

I don't need a hotshot fast car. I am not out to please anyone. I just need a car that had good gas mileage, was great for its price, was super reliable, and is rather safe (for a baby).

Had a few non-standard extras, which weren't even in the listing for it...like Cruise Control, 6-Disc CD Changer...

Kelly Blue Book listed the suggested retail value of the car at $16,910 at the time. San Francisco Toyota wanted $16,488.

I got it worked down to $13,788. And it was because I got it down to like $14,000 and the dude slipped up and said he could prob get it for $13,500 but then his manager came back and said they absolutely couldn't go that low, hehe...

I could have gotten a CE model for like $11,800, maybe even less.

Anyhow, added on the full big huge warrantee on top of it for another $1,800. The power-train warrantee is really restrictive and doesn't cover a lot of things (including anything that's electrical). On this flyer thay had it only covered about 7-10% of the major things that could go wrong. With the big warrantee, they will fix ANYTHING that goes wrong outside of brake pads. And I believe if something goes wrong that can be caused by not getting the oil changed when it should be, they won't cover it then. But as long as I do that, they will fix anything. Figured if one thing goes wrong 3 or 4 years down the road and causes a lot of problems, it will pay for itself.

Finally, the real reason why I absolutely love it? I learned that I could make it all the way from Pleasanton, CA to Fountain Valley, CA (Orange County, just south of Huntington Beach!) on one tank of gas. No fill-ups! Although the gas light was on when I exited off the highway to go home. But still, can make the trip using only one $30 or so tank of gas (at today's gas prices).

Though I should point out that it's highway mileage is DRASTICALLY better than city mileage. It's a much bigger difference than what the sticker said. ;p

Damn, I forgot how I can ramble on forever.

If you look at the safety rating from the IIHS site, the 05-07 Corolla got a poor rating (not sure why since it got good for frontal, but I'm guessing the non side air bag equipped ones pulled it down) and the '07 Yaris got an overall marginal rating.

So if your dad doesn't already have a favorite car in mind and is concerned mostly for safety, then have him check out the Civic, Impreza and Versa.
