It's 11:45pm, 15 minutes before the grand opening of your new club. You've been fiercly hyping it and there is a huge crowd waiting at the door. Your opening DJ is making final tweeks to your state of the art sound system. Everything is on schedule.
Suddenly, several dark figures appear in the club. Before you even have time to call security they dissappear in clouds of smoke. You scan the club and stop cold when you get to the DJ booth. It's empty. Your stomach tightens as you realize that Ninjas have kidnapped the DJ.
The other DJ's haven't arrived yet, and it doesn't take you long to understand that you will have to spin the opening set yourself. You sprint to the office and grab your record bag and laptop. Your mind is racing as you jump behind the decks. You know that you're very capable of throwing down a killer set, but you need a moment to collect yourself and the crowd is getting impatient.
With the lights as low as possible, you instruct the front door to let the people in. The curious crowd files into the oddly quiet venue. The club fills to capacity and the dancefloor is packed. You cue lighting to take it down to total darkness. As the lights drop the background noise lowers to a nervous buzz.
This is the moment you've been working so hard for. You have the crowd exactly where you want them. It's time to start this party.
You slowly exhale as you place the first disk on the platter. This is the track that will set the stage for your success. The tune you've chosen is...................(insert track name)

This reminds me of something else that bugs me: why don't clubs ever do random, unexpected, or wacky stuff like that? If they did I'd go out to them a lot more often. As it is, when I go out the experience is about as predictable as waiting in line at the DMV. I know beforehand pretty much what is going to be played, when the headliner will come on, etc. etc. blah blah blah.
That is boring. A lot more fun than the DMV, sure, but still so predictable. Why can't it be different for once?
[Yeah, I know the answer, same one for any big business: MONEY. It's a shame.]
