In the context of this thread, it's the cheesy Benny Benassi/Eric Prydz effect.

In err... "professional" production, it's more often used when you have an effect which you don't want to drown out the rest of the mix, i.e. reverb. It's common, for example, to sidechain a vocal reverb to the dry original; that way you can put a huge reverb on it, which you don't hear much of while the vocalist is singing, but as soon as s/he stops singing, it echoes for 10 seconds. You hear this all the time in EDM and pop music alike.

They also use it on the radio, so an announcer can talk over the track - you'll hear the announcer's voice at normal volume and the track suddenly goes to half volume. They're not actually fiddling with the volume, they're just using a sidechained compressor (most of the time).

sidechaining the bass with the kick drum has been used professionally for along time before benny benassi, it start in rock music.

Not to the extent that Benassi and the hundreds of copycat producers use it. In pop/rock it's usually a very subtle effect and basically transparent to the listener.

Benassi certainly wasn't the first, just the most well-known. If I recall correctly Kraftwerk was doing it quite some time ago.

its usually a subtle effect in trance too

Thanks again digi! However all new to me and maybe a little advanced at this point? I don't really hear anything significant in the the sample? Other than the bass riff with the 2 chord pad at the beginning of each measure? Can't really hear how they relate to each other? Guess thats why I ain't a producer! lol

But what's it got to do with the pad chords? And while were at it. The bass isnt that "pumping" at all. More droned out to me!

well in the sample provided, the pads are being sidechained, and i think the bass is too...

but anyway, cant you hear the pads "pumping"!? it stands out i think...

Sorry dude not really! I just hear the pad at the first bar of every measure. Isnt a pad sort of pumping in itself? Usually used to have a pretty good ear for this sort of thing. Guess not anymore in my old age! lol Maybe I'll look for a more evident example somewhere. Maybe a before and after idea!!!

No, the pad isn't pumping at all in itself. The "pumping" is the effect the sidechain compressor is having on the pad.
