I love lasers and strobe lights.. the more the better. When I'm at the guv, I'm as blown away by the lasers going everywhere as I am the music sometimes. Maybe it's cause I do dj/lighting at a club that was a very weak laser system, so I appreciate the fact that I'm actually in a presence of something more than half decent.

+1

I personally love lazers, and I think it adds to the experience! I'm a relatively a new to the scene, so it might be that i'm still entranced by all the lazers and lighting effects! Maybe somewhere down the road i'll feel the same way as some of you ppl, but right now...bring on more lazers!

thinking back on it, i think i always like the lights at aria cos they were very minimal (and in the floor!) and it was dark, from what i remember. i could be wrong though!

Aria had 3 or 4 rigs mounted to the ceiling that each had 4 or 6 moving heads on them. in addition to strobes etc... The rigs could also move down up and down. At least that's the way it was the times I went there over the years. the last being July 2005.

sigh what are us professionals to do

After 12 years of going to clubs and raves, and almost 7 years of organizing my own events, including doing visuals with live video mixing and helping with the lights... yer damn straight I'm an expert :p

I don't know what everthings called or how to operate them all.. but i've rented/used enough equipment to know what everything does, and spent enough time in dark rooms filled with repetative beats to know what works ;)

Give me lasers and smoke and hands-in-the-air trance and I'm happy, but lose the goddamn strobelights everywhere.

I'm surprised it wasn't Argentina.

fly has a decent lighting set up, and from time to time someone who can use it to it's full potential too.

lasers are awesome when used properly (meaning in synch, not just randomly shooting/spinning). Strobes can be too much sometimes. when deep dish came at 10 year, the strobes starting to going crazy near the end of their set. like it was a good 5 min of strobes. everyone lookeed crazy and caught in time and i had to close my eyes. other lighting depends on the venue and what the place is trying to portray. Went to a house party last night and we had a strobe, black light, a laser and a fog machine. crazy jam. here some pics (i think somethings wrong my with my camera though... all my pics ive been taking with it are really grainy)

i knew they weren't just in the floor! :p

i just remember it always being very dark in there. maybe that's because my eyes were always closed lol.

I agree with nadezhda, they are cheesey, and I do this for a living.

Distracting lights are usually a sign of bad programming, and in a club situation you are limited to a set number of effects/movements or audio input which, In my opinion, is a shameful waste of equipment and electricity. 15 hours of lasers-in-the-face will get tedious, they should be used to set a mood, not give clubgoers flash blindness.

I like to use diffusers and other media, with laser light, to get some very diffferent effects. I don't care for overused "beam effects", "flat fans" and other "stock" movements.

I like to think I do a pretty good job, since I'm still in the business and have been for a VERY long time.

...plus, lasers are REALLY expensive, clubs should concentrate on booking good talent, instead of a huge laser/lighting systems.

a good lighting guy knows the right time to use anything.
and most importantly, he knows exactly the right time to shut it all off.
i like the dark.
