Good to know you represent the entire population.

that book "how to DJ right" is actually pretty good. there is a good quote in the beginning:

quote:
You too? You want to get paid for putting on tunes? Well, here's the entrance exam. DO you love music, or do you just dream of being Sasha? We won't hammer it home too hard, but if you really want to DJ right, if you want to be great at it, you have to be doing it for the right reasons: not for private jets and power over a dance floor, but because of a simple and unavoidable need to share music with people. Without the gene for musical evangelism, you'll just be a jukebox.

Now that DJing is a respectale career, this often gets forgotten - a scary number of kids think it's just about technical skills and access to the most up-front tunes. The saddest things we found while researching were kids' questions on bulletin boards saying, "I want to be a DJ. What kind of music should I play?" If that's you and you really don't know, then pu tthis book back immediately. Give this book to someone who actually cares about music, who lives and dies for their record collection, who knows without question what music they should play - the music they love, stupid.

i dont look up at the crowd, typically I just check TA, myspace and my stock portfolio on my laptop while I DJ.

if i have some extra time between tracks, i'll play some minesweeper.

i learned from these 2 superstars:

lol @ pic ^

of course crowd interaction is important, would you rather have an energetic dj or a tree mixing for you? You really wanna pay to see someone spinning for you and is having no fun at all?

I pay to hear good music, preferably stuff I haven't heard before. I hope the DJ is having fun, but whether he looks like he's having a good time is really irrelevant to whether I enjoy the night, unless he's very obviously pissed off or something.

I dont agree with Fatboy Slim.

Neither do I. As good as that whole book is at educating you about the profession of jockeying discs, there's a strong aren't-DJs-the- tone running through it. I remember the intro saying something like "People don't buy albums any more, they buy compilations. Compilations mixed by DJs. Power!" Although there's a big show to say they're not about superstar DJs, the book is an essential contradiction between claiming it's all about the music and simultaneously trying to make DJs into mystical figures, capable of altering time and space as they see fit. It's quite ing annoying actually.

Why does it matter that we have a difference of opinion?
