There's a reason for this, which is that certain "all white clubs" in the past were openly violently racist. |
How is ANY club that operates on the basis of race, not racist? |

we used to have "hick" parties back in college, where everyone would come dressed in flannel and hillbilly overalls and whatnot. i would LOVE if some southern gentleman found it out and called us up "now listen here, i done don't appreciate your disrespekt on ma family. alright? you upset my sister and she didn't want to have sex for a week!" |
Well, I'm assuming you're white, in which case, that's the difference--making fun of a group you're a part of, while not the brightest thing to do, isn't likely to be too 'offensive.'
However, I thought about it, and I cannot honestly say I wouldn't be a bit annoyed, if not just angry if I heard about some group of black kids doing the same thing, so you have to apply that to both sides. Just don't mock other cultures, or even the overblown stereotypes of other cultures, and it's all good. |

By "racist" I meant the particular ideology that teaches that certain groups are inferior and that it's okay to use violence to "keep them in their place." |

Judging people by the sins of their forefathers is a tad outdated reasoning for political decisions these days. |

| Correct, which is why I think people should be able to form whatever clubs they want, as I said above. |

this is true.
| quote: | | Sometimes it does get ridiculous, and I agree that there's no reason to regulate speech, although places like private universities can of course regulate whatever they want. At the same time, I think sentiments like, "I don't care what that dude wants to be called, I'm going to call him a nigger!" are justly considered backward and ignorant. Not saying that you would say something like that or that such opinions should be criminalized. They shouldn't be. |
private universities can and do regulate speach and many other things that, imho, shouldn't be, but that is part of the reason they are a private uni.
| quote: | | For what the kids were doing at the party? I would hardly call that "political," although I wouldn't impute any evil motives to them, either. They were just having fun with the stupid images that most everybody gets bombarded with on a daily basis in America. |
political satire doesnt necessary refer to government politics. |

white and black kids at the party. the point is it's not so much a race mock, as a culture mock. black people have nothing to do with this - i have seen plenty of white and mexican and (insert color) dress up the same way as depicted at this party - and these people dress like that for real.
i've done plenty of stupid in college so i don't blame these s for doing it. the best thing they can do is apologize and move on - an "investigation" will only cause Rev. Jesse Jackson to show his black ass up and run his ing mouth off and get more national media attention. |

Couldn't agree more with either of those points. |

"Satire" usually indicates something with a serious intent, even though it may have a humorous form. I don't think these kids had any serious intent, either to mock black people or to ridicule the fact that stereotypes are so prevalent. I just think they were having some fun.
Could be wrong, though. |

Oh deary me. Soon you won't even be able to say the word "black" without getting ripped to pieces.
The school I used to go to had this tradition of its graduating (9th grade) students dressing up silly for the final group photo. We (my class) painted ourselves black to resemble an African tribe. The paint was a bitch to get off. We didn't get any complaints whatsoever, I really don't see what the big deal is. |

I find it amusing that the protest against "political correctness" was and is far, far larger than the phenomenon itself ever was.
Mostly a tempest in a teapot if you ask me, although there were and still are some really ridiculous instances of PC. |
