Amazing night....great music...great crowd...great club!
Can't wait for next week....the last few have been fab!
The TOTAs make a big difference to the party attitude at any club...it's been good to see so many at Sonic the last few weeks... |

I just want to add that I thought Jonny White did a great job opening on Saturday. While I generally enjoy his minimal techno material a lot, it is not always the easiest to dance to -- especially if your name isn't nada, yve, graham, shanny or rj. That said, I particularly enjoyed his set from 2am onward, and judging by the crowd's energy level, so did everyone else. The track he played from 2:00 - 2:10 had a sweet breakdown that really got people groovin'. I definitely look forward to hearing him again in the near future...
P.S. For those who missed Guy Gerber at Sonic back in December, you can download a recent set of his I posted Jan 27th in the Househead thread. This guy is phenomenal (no pun intended), and indicative of top notch talent Carey brings in each week. Thanks again, Carey. |

saturday night was amazing as usual. sonic is by far the best club in toronto imo. i have yet to have a bad experience there.
i enjoyed johnny white's set, but it didn't really get me moving. john creamer's set was perfect for me. it was my first time seeing him, and he definately delivered. my legs couldn't hold me up much longer, so i only caught about 45 mins of behrouz's set. after reading the reviews of behrouz, i regret leaving that early.
it was great seeing everyone out as always. and good to see some faces i haven't seen in awhile. |

After getting off work and grabbing somewhat of a two hour nap (is that really a nap for an insomniac?) I woke up feeling like and honestly doubted whether I was gonna go. A couple of quick double vodka red-bulls, and I still felt craptacular, except now I wasn't gonna get back to sleep any time soon, so at 1:30 I decided to be a trooper and make the solo trip to the club.
Got there just shy of 2 to a small line up, and was in with in five minutes (hmmm, I've done both, and it always seems like the non-guestlist line moves faster, not that I was complaining on Sat). I must have walked into the track that SuperJimbo is talkin about, since the appetizer Johnny White had me right away and I danced my way to the bar for that first bottle of water and red bull. It's been said in the past how great a staff Sonic has, but I have to say that the girl working the bar is easily the most pleasant bartender I've ever dealt with, and after working in the industry for ten years, thats comparing a lot of bartenders.
Anyways, Mr. White did a fantastic job keeping the flow going and even building up towards Creamer's set. If he had his entire set planned out beforehand, then the extra couple of tracks that he got to throw down past three are a testament to how well he did, since they would have been off the cuff, but didn't stray from what he had been doing.
As far as Creamer goes, I have to say I was both impressed and disapointed with his set. I enjoyed all of the tracks he played, some for that nostalgic feel, and some for pure danceability, but I never really got the feeling of the direction he was going in. I've heard that he's more of a producer than a dj, and maybe that's indicative of why I felt he lacked a story line over a full length set. I was also bothered by all the stop-starts at the end of his set. I'm more than willing to forgive the occaissional occurence, as I realize that sometimes a mix refuses to work as planned and you need to bail on it, but that many times in that short a time-span can really kill a crowd.
Fortunately it didn't, as Behrouz definitely brought the main course for the night, along with dessert, the after-dinner coffee and even a shot of Baileys thrown into the mix. There's nothing that hasn't been said already about the quality of his set. Short and simple: He owned. Even after I was feeling 100% drained and normally would have gone home, I stayed for over an hour longer and just chilled to the music. When I realized it was just past eight and I didn't even have the energy left to walk home, I decided it was time to go. I probably would have stayed to the bitter end if I had gotten a full night's sleep the night before, but it just wasn't in the cards.
I've been going to Sonic at least once or twice a month since I moved to this city back in June, sometimes solo, sometimes with friends from Waterloo, and I need to say that the last two weeks have been, hands down, the best overall experiences I've had there. They've even eclipsed my usual heavyweight favorites such as Industry Reunion and Sneak's Birthday Beats. The crowds have been top-notch. It doesn't matter who was there or who wasn't there, as long as everybody was there to have a good time. The number of people with smiles on their faces all night long was incredible, and tells me that all were there for the music, which always leads to a better night imo. It was great to meet everyone I did, Shanny, Spitty, Rachel (again), and everybody else, as that only added to the night. Sorry I didn't talk much, but I never do. I think its a product of ADD. Hell, my friends usually consider going to a club with me to be the equivalent of playing Where's Waldo, since I rarely stay in the same place for too long and don't really make my presence known by talking.
Overall, this was a phenomenal night, the only downfall for myself being the lack of storytelling in Creamer's set, which can be easily overlooked by thinking about the quality of the individual tracks that he did play. Heading into a killer two weeks of work, I'm glad that this will be the party stuck in my head until my next night out, which should be a cluster of a night, with Switch at Footwork, Saw Recordings at Sonic, and then Attalla at the Zone. I may need the two weeks to get myself ready to party again after burning myself out this weekend.

For myself I found the opener pretty good but it was a warm up set so that's how it made me feel. It's wasn't driving me. John Creamer started off a little blah to me but the middle of his set was phenomenal, I was dancing my face off for a while there. I did find the end of his set to be blah as well though. Behrouz didn't impress me much. I liked it but it just wasn't driving me. Like KevinT (from HA) I found it to be more of a tap your foot type of thing but I did dance a bit to it. Some music makes me dance, some music makes me listen. His set made me listen more then dance. Ni-cd said it just wasn't my genre. Perhaps he was right, not knowing what my genre is makes it hard for me to tell, lol. We left about 7 and went to the Zone to catch the last of Nathan's set. Thanks Nathan, you made my night.
Great seeing all the HA's, met a few TA's too which was also nice. Nice to meet you Highroller and English Rachel. I loved the venue, that massive disco ball was cool. Less annoying then the smaller ones too, probably because it seemed to have smaller mirrors so the lights it gave off didn't blind me like they usually do. The sound was great, it was almost loud enough to be uncomfortable, just the way I like it. The crowd seemed okay to me, I didn't really talk to many people that I didn't already know so I can't really say. It was just too loud for conversation and the patio was too cold to stay out there for any length of time. I loved the couches/benches in back, lots of room for sitting there. Sometimes you just have to rest and chill for a bit. I'd go there again.
This was a looonnnggggg party weekend for me. I was parting Friday night after work, then Saturday at Sonic followed by a couple of hours of Zone in the morning then back to Zone at night until closing. I'm so tired today it's not funny. Worth it though, so worth it. |

Something that I just remembered that was really annoying me on Saturday was the amount of people smoking, especially near the end of the night. There was one point at the end of the night where I counted 5 people smoking. Come on guys, I know it's cold outside, but you've gotta' deal with it if you want to smoke. Don't ruin other people's fun just because you don't want to deal with going outside.
When you're inside a hot and humid club, and there is poor ventilation, when someone starts smoking, the smoke just kind of hangs there. It's awful. |

I couldn't agree more. I'm a smoker myself, but if I didn't feel like going out in the cold, well, I just didn't have one. When I did feel like it, I went, I smoked fast and I got back inside. A smoke break doesn't have to be a fifteen minute trip, making the amount of time outside unbearable. On nights like Saturday, when the club is as hot as it was, just breathing in the humidity itself requires a days recovery after.
At least there's no out of control smoke machine though. |

| Just wanted to say that the Saturday was ing sickk, the last 45 mins of the night (morning) were the best! haha Sonic has been sickk the last fiew weeks, hopefully it will keep up. Asfor the str8 s who have a problem with all the "fags" at sonic, i have to words... YOU! Sonic is for everyone and anyone who loves house music and loves to dance, having gay people around you is not gonna kill you, and most of the str8 guys dont care, so grow up! See everyone on Saturday! <3 |
