Why is House invading Trance? (pg. 5)

But why stick with one music forum just becuse 'it has always been like that'? I'm sure when this forum was born, the amount of users, threads and posts were not the same amount as of today. Things were easy to keep up with since the constant flow of new threads was low back then, and if it still was like that i would not bother. But now things are different, we have about 70 000 registered members and a good number of them i'm sure is posting stuff here regularly.
Some people say that only one music section is good because it keeps TA from getting into a place full of narrow-minded trance elitists, and that splitting the music discussion into one main and one alternative would only make people interested in the main one. I don't believe that's going to happen because of now people seems very well interested in the alternative type of music and i don't see why they would give it up just because a new section is created specificly for them.
Also all these threads appearing about 'trance dead?', don't you think it means something, that people wonder where the trance have gone in this forum?
Maybe the 'strictly trance' section should be the alternative one then if the amount of people interested in trance is decreasing. Maybe that's why some people feel that the trance related info sometimes is hard to find here. |

I think you've got the causality mixed up here. |

Sorry but what do you mean?
EDIT: Okay i think i got you right here. Since english isn't my mother tounge some sentences might end up a bit unfortunate :D
So what i meant was that if the flow of trance related info is decreasing, a trance only section could be usefull for those who doesn't want to look through tons of unrelated stuff. |

Maybe there is less trance related info because of just that, there being less interesting trance to get people talking. |

The poor state of trance causes the lack of trance posts, not the other way around.
Like I said, I'd love to post about trance. But there just isn't much to talk about. |

Well, I'd like to know, what exactly do you think we would gain from having a trance only forum? If you think more people will start talking trance and you'll get alot more info, I think thats not going to happen, for the reasons Cobalt and I have just pointed out. |

I just felt this place is the only serious place you can discuss trance music on on a international level. And if people are abandoning trance in this forum for other types of music i think it will be harder to find related info and people.
After all this is, or was, mainly a trance forum once upon a time and i would think of it as a sad thing to let the other genres take up more space than this forum was intended to be from the begining.
It's simply a matter of practically finding relevant info that can be interesting about trance. And i believe that making sections like that would help people. If you want trance, you look in the trance section.
If you want house, you look in the alternative section. At least that's how i work if i want to find relevant information.
Like now i only feel annoyed when things i really don't care about fills half of the screen.
So that's how i experience this. |

| I see your point Whirloop, and totally understand where you are coming from, but I think the simple fact is I'm 99% sure it's not going to happen and in my opinion, that isn't a bad thing. |

Yeah I see your point. :) I just feel that the trance forum would see less activity than the main one, and kinda be in the shadow. I think its good for all genres to get lumped together, to me it kind of makes it a more interesting forum, since it feels more like a snapshot of the current trends in EDM. |

Also, one of the bigger issues that comes up with chopping things up into little, more specific forums is that activity winds up going down because:
A: Older members don't know what goes where
B: Newer members just see that nobody's been posting in a while and don't bother checking back that often.
C: Everyone feels a bit more nervous discussing anything, as they feel the need to be an expert on whatever genre it is.
Even if there isn't a thread on the specific type of EDM that you like in here more than every few days (and that'd be a stretch), a good number of people wind up checking back here all the time, because there are always new posts, regardless of what they're actually about. So when the time comes that that tiny little niche gets brought up, all of its fans are ready to hop into a discussion about it.
To address C more thoroughly, with a general "music" section, it gives the idea that there's no specific prerequisite necessary for participation--you don't have to know all about anything. However, I know that, at least to personally, I'd feel quite hesitant about posting anything in a forum dedicated to a specific genre, worrying that this might be something that all fans of the type of music already know, or that it's something that all of them hate. For instance, if there is a thread about genre A asking about favorite artists in the genre, and you mention Johnny Applesauce as your favorite genre A artist, there's still likely to be another Johnny Applesauce fan in here, even if it's because all Johnny Applesauce fans are also trance fans, but all fans of genre A hate him. with the current situation, your post about Johnny Applesauce results in some amused grumbling from the genre A elite, but also a number of posts in agreement from Johnny Applesauce fans. With a genre A forum, the other Johnny Applesauce fans would never see the post, and your reply would only result in a giant flame assault from the genre A fans, banishing you from the forum, and leaving you to wonder if you're the only one who likes Johnny.
Now, I'm sure that some will say "but isn't it a good thing if people don't just blurt out whatever they think, and keep posting 'omg what is this Tiesto tune from 2000' threads?" Yes and no. It would certainly be cleaner, but almost any activity is good activity for a forum, as a healthy one is always better than a dead one. Also, keep in mind that a lot of those people wind up sticking around. Hell, I originally came here to find a tracklist from a PvD radio show from '99, but wound up sticking around long enough to read through enough stuff and download enough sets from people who enjoyed all sorts of stuff, since it was all lumped in more broad forums, that I found my tastes shifting dramatically, all the way to what I listen to now. Would that not have happened because there were different MD forums? It probably would have anyways, since, to be honest, I stayed away from this place for a long time, due to the horror stories, but I'd imagine it might, for a lot of people, or, at the very least, would slow that process. |
