The only way I think A-Rod might opt out of his contract is IF there is a SS position available for him to play on a contending team with an above average infield.
As far as the BoSox being scarier this season as opposed to last season... I wouldnt say that. We have no idea what Matsuzaka can do, nor do we have any idea whether Papelbon is capable of pitching 6/7+ innings. I dont think we will see Papelbon starting consistently until half way into the season, until then I will expect him to play in relief and maybe start fairly randomly throughout the rotation.
Im happy with what the Yankees did this year getting rid of some old, and picking up alot of new. Although, I was never crazy about them getting Randy in the first place. Im curious to see how Igawa adjusts to the majors, and Im even more curious to see Philip Hughes make his debut in the majors. |

let's go mets. both new york teams are looking good to start the season, though i think the mets' pitching staff has many 3s, 4s, and 5s, but no clear ace. yankees did great stockpiling for the future and getting rid of sheffield and randy. unlike most of you mets haters/yankees fans, i don't mind watching yankees games as a mets fan. your hate is misplaced. |
MY HATRED FOR THE METS ISNT MISPLACED...I HATE THE METS,,ITS WELL KNOWN TOTALLY DIRECTED AT THE METS...I DONT RESPECT THEM OR ANYTHING THEY HAVE ACHIEVED...ITS HARD TO RESPECT NOTHING,,RIGHT..
YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU SAL BUT WHEN IT COMES TO BASEBALL ALL BETS ARE OFF.... |

VLAD IM IN TWO MINDS,,I AGREE RANDY WAS A BAD CHOICE AND HE HAD TO GO BUT SHOULD IT COME DOWN TO IT I WOULDNT WANNA FACE HIM..AS FOR SHEFF,,IM SAD TO SEE HIM GO BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE BEEN SQUEEZED INTO A DIFFERENT ROLE..I WOULD HAVE LET MATSUI GO BEFORE SHEFF..MELKE IS SO IMPRESSIVE IN LEFT FIELD BUT BATS WEAK.. VLAD,,GIVE ME YOUR IDEAL YANKEE LINEUP.... |

how many teams have SS that are untouchable at their position? if the price is right, i think a lot of teams would negotiate if a-rod opted out. |

Of course teams would want to go after him, but one problem is some teams dont have the wallet for him... another is are they playoff contenders and do they have a good infield. |

Trade Matsui and not Sheffield? Why not still trade Matsui? We have Melky, we know he can hit and he's the best OF defender on the team. Hes very mature for a 22 year old and displays the plate presense of a veteran.
Theres really no room to screw with the Yankee line-up, chances are what people expect it to be, it will be...
Damon, Jeter, Abreu, ARod, Cano, Giambi, Matsui, Posada, Mienkeiwitz
The tricky part about having so many really good hitters is the strategy of where you want to put them. I like Cano in the 5th spot because he hits for average and can get alot more RBI's than Giambi in that spot, plus this doesnt impinge on Giambi's numbers cause Cano gets on base and can advance runners also.
BTW, Im glad we finally got a good defender at 1B.
Rotation: Mussina, Wang, Pettite, Igawa, Pavano/Hughes |

AROD isn't opting out of anything. The market is topped out at around 20 million. AROD, Manny, & Barry Bonds are the only players that have made more than 21 million a season (giambi and jeter make between 20 - 21 MM). AROD is due 72 MM over the 3 years remaining after this year. While AROD is at his prime, he only has 3 - 4 more years to go in his prime. no team is going to drop 25 million a year if its not a long term deal and arod won't be putting up 25 mill a year numbers for 6 years, that is unless he decides to go the hgh route.
Plus, if he opts out of the contract you can be sure the yankees aren't going to be bidding up his contract price. Who else would pay that much. The mets aren't going to deal for him (not with reyes and wright). It would basically be between the chicago teams, angels, and boston. The cubs have clearly given out their disgusting contracts (soriano and aramus). So of the remaining teams only boston has shown the willingness to get crazy like the yankees, and with only one crazy bidding team you can't get a major contract like that.
At least that's my take. |

ARod would be dumb to walk away from a guaranteed 25 a year... no matter how bad it gets in NY for him. Plus he would only be making fans perception of him worse by running away from the criticisims.
Matsui is also another guy who isn't going anywhere, at least not on the Yankees accord - he brings in tons of revenue from Japan and gives the yanks tons of free publicity over there. He is a money machine for the Yanks. |

i did say IF the price is right. you're not reading. and what about him playing for texas for a few years? it's not like they were playoff contenders... |

When Papelbon started in the minors, he averaged about 6 innings per start.
And, if they are serious about him in the rotation, and it seems like they are, then it will be right from the start of the season. Giving a young bullpen arm spot starts is a terrible idea. It's one or the other, and, according to Francona, the dude's gonna start. |
