How many of you still use hardware gear? (pg. 2)

After using only software for a couple of years I start working with hardware now - recently i bought a alpha juno-1. I like it! Fat sound (not comparable to software) and its cheap :)

I was all software for over 3 years. Then I got my Virus TI a few weeks ago, and I love its sound, the physical feel of controlling your sound with your hands, and the absolute elimination of CPU usage :)

As far as the sound goes, it's massive. It's my first hardware synth as well, but it's still massive. Boy is there a lot to learn with it though :nervous: hehe

Yeah, the VIRUS is really an amazing piece of gear. I have the KB and it just produces the phattest sounding sounds. I've also got the JP-8000...

Still, I *prefer* using software because it's easier to work with within the sequencer, vs two separate interfaces when dealing with hardware... Hardware does add lots of room for creativity though...

i use both but mainly software because ive so many soundsets, im at the satge where im just really teaching myself the tracks of the trade so my cpu usage is low but if i were to try a full track with soft synths and plugins id be maxed out in no time! i must admit that none of my softsynths sound anywhere near as good as my jp-8080 !!

My setup has evolved from pure pc (in the tracker days baby!) to soundwise pure hardware (with a pc just for midi sequencing), to hybrid. And with what I have going now, I can take on the world :D

I guess when you try it all out you will find out what works best for you.

oh right, the obligatory kit list

I'm thinking about selling my Virus B too.

I used to have some hardware synths but to be honest, I don't use them much anymore. I rarely use my Virus B. So I started all freeware and demos. Then I bought some software. Got the hardware bug a year to 2 years ago and now in the past few months I'm almost 100% software again.

If its digital it doesn't really mean squat.

Theres alot of Virus love in the forum but I just don't seem to like the sound of the virus anymore. The oscillators sound so weak...The wavetables are puny. Filter saturation on the Virus is just the most pointless thing because it almost always makes the filter sound and its never sounds good for overdriven leads. And all the distortion effects suck. Workflow is good on the VB but /i hate the UI on the TI.

I have an electribe em-1 and an Alesis Ion.

The electribe is a toy, but toys are fun.

The ion is nice.
It might not do things that software can't do, but yet I do things with it, that i previously wouldnt have done with software. Its just more intuitive to learn with a peice of hardware like this. Then you can apply those techniques to vsts.

for synths I'm 50-50, I have a virus c and a nord rack 2 thats for the hardware side and I use albino and vanguard, sometimes I absynth but thats about it,

For sampler battery mainly and kontakt occasionally

In terms of fx I use plug ins only uad urs ... camel space camel phat,ect.. If I were to go hardware that would be for a an eventide harmonizer and a good preamp this is on my list of thing to buy.

I might go for another hardware synth a some point as long as it has a distinctive sound that i like of course, I'm not gonna go hardware for the sake of it.

cheers

I think I'm really starting to agree with Derivative here. Something about the Virus B just doesnt sound good to me. I'll use it for the occasional pad or bass line, but ever since I got the impOSCar, I just find myself turning to that more and more. I can't put my finger on it but the "character" of that softsynth just gel's more with the sounds I'm trying to make.

I still use it, in fact I've just brought a JP8080 and am looking to get a Virus b and Micro Q to go with my Nova.

It is just another option when it comes to making sound. They all have their signature sounds and personally I find it easier to work with them.

Its about trying to experiment to create your sound like running your synths direct into a guitar stomp box and other bits before running into your pc.

Not to mention freeing up my CPU for lush fx plugins!!
