Sufjan Stevens vs. Signalrunners - Chicago (Club Mix) [incl. Sample]

Absolutely magnificent bootleg from the Signalrunners. I was so surprised to hear it on yesterday's Trance Around The World show. I really hope they get clearance and release it officially. If Sufjan Stevens is truly an advocate of indie music and creative freedom, then he'll definitely oblige. This would sound wicked in a club too - I can already imagine everyone singing along to the chorus, that would make for some very special moments. Only negative that might annoy some people is the trumpet (used overzealously maybe?), but I'm sure they could replace that with a wicked synth when/if they made the final, official track. Check it out!

** Not the entire song, starts past any intro segment and faded out at the end before the transition into the next track is obvious. |

| i really hope sufjan never hears this. ill give signalrunners some credit for remixing a great song, but seriously, all it is some beats under the original. this isnt creativity. |

It's peculiar that you say that. First, it is a bootleg remix as of right now, so they did sample the original full track - however, they filtered and equalized well and only took the beatless sections of the original to get the vocals and the trumpet and string melodies. They didn't only add beats, there is a lot more added than just a drum track. So much so, even a dub version would probably sound amazing. What would be a creative remix of this track in your opinion? If you are appealing to the idea of complexity and difference being the main creative ingridients, that is fallacious. F*ckin' up the vocals and creating a strange minimal atmosphere or adding some hip-hop beats or IDM sounds would be 'different' and arguably more unique than the trance style the Signalrunners employ, but it would certainly not mean there is a lot more creativity on display. In fact, a lot of producers have messed up vocals a lot and made very strange bootlegs and remixes of tracks that were originally very, very different - so you could say it's almost pretentious and unoriginal to do that sometimes. I think that applies to this song. Keeping the vocals, chorus and main melodic elements the same is really what the Signalrunners wanted to do. They liked that about the original track, but just wanted to make a very club-friendly, moving, powerful trance tune. The original is a nice song, but the drum track is nothing to rave about whatsoever. The vocalization and melodies are really what shines.
If you're some sort of indie purist, then I guess you're entitled to bounce away ideas like this, but I for one am always excited to see bootlegs by electronic artists, especially when amazing ones such as this one come around.
*goes off on a tangent*
It seems to me that the whole hyper-indie and art-rock scene often reeks of subtle, yet severe pretentiousness and self-absorbtion - and probably more so the fans than the artists.
"OMG! SUFJAN STEVENS JUST QUOTED A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FOR LYRICS AND RECORDED IT IN HIS BEDROOM WITH AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND FLUTE! HE DIDNT EVEN MASTER IT OR DO ANY POSTPROCESSING! YOU CAN EVEN HEAR THE HISS OF THE BACKGROUND NOISE IN THE ROOM BECAUSE OF HIS CHEAP MICROPHONE! A CREATIVE GENIUS! A MASTERMIND!"
Exaggerated, but not really that far-fetched! I bet Sufjan snickers and giggles a lot when he makes songs and thinks of his fans. |

| I already enjoyed the original a lot (thanks to Little Miss Sunshine), but this remix is just awesome. I love the trumpet and the chorus! Hearing this track makes me very happy :) |

Agreed...
This is .
Really .
The pitch lock ruins the vocals, its sped up to where everything feels rushed, it looses all the originals effects from tempo.
it.
I'd seriously kick Signalrunners in the in nuts if I saw them.
*edit*
GAH!
Listen to the original and listen to the tremolo in Sufjans voice, the pitch shift s that all to hell and you lose a lot of the emotion in the song.
This is just bad bad bad bad! :( |

i personally don't think it sounds rushed at all. but thats all a matter of perception, becuase if the original is locked in your mind, then yeah, this may sound ed up in comparison.
On earlier comments, i think its purely ignorent to say they only added a drum beat. Signalrunners worked wonders on the original (which i'm not really a fan of, but thats subjective). Listen to them back to back, and you'll see that they did a lot! This song would sound smashing in a club. I hope above & beyond will play it tomorrow in Toronto! |

:haha:
They worked "wonders" on it?! Dude its a kick, a shoddy bass, some generic pads, and then a low pass filter on the build. Yea thats some wonder right there. No wonder trance has gone to if people are impressed by crap like this. |

You mean people who see the music for what it is?
I didn't know ignorance and apathy is what kept people listening to this music... sad if thats true... :( |
