to be fair Macarthur, as a general, had every right to want to want to hit China. it was the way he went about voicing his opinion to the entire world that hurt him.
EDIT> we're not invading Iran:rolleyes: |

I don't see a problem with being against war and being supportive of troops. If anything, being anti-war supports the troops more than pro-war people. Less casualties that way. You definitely don't have to want troops to die to be against the war, although there seems to be a lot of that around here. |
...and who's going to fight the wars again? lol :haha: |

How do you expect someone to oppose a war without opposing the soldiers?
I always found the "I oppose the war but support troops" to be one of the most two-faced and assinine things ever uttered.
I oppose the war, and therefore by definition I oppose the troops that prosecute the war and nothing is going to make the war end sooner than enough American soldiers getting shot up to a degree where American public finally says "Enough! Enough!"
At least I don't lie to myself about it, like the two-faced sycophants. |
I've always thought the whole concept of "supporting the troops" yet "opposing the war" is ludicrous and nonsensical to begin with. How exactly do you "support" them if you're against what they're doing there or disagree with them being there in the first place? They're essentialy implementing the agenda/policy of the policy makes, regardless of what it is, and if you don't support those policies, I fail to see how one in any real sense of the term "supports the troops." When you "support" someone or some group it's generally assumed that you support their cause or what they're doing. Yeah, you can care about the troops, but that's not the same as supporting them. And I don't see why I should care so much about some random person I don't know, anymore that I would about any other random person I don't know. I've lived in too many different places growing up and am fairly disillusioned with patriotism disguised as nationalism or identifying with some meanigless flag in order to feel like a part of something or define who or what I am. Being a citizen of country X or a member of group X doesn't make you any more special or somehow increase the value of your existance over others. Which is another reason why I would never support an unnecessary and unjust war/act of agression/terrorism or anything of the sort, and I certainly won't sympathize with all of the idiots involved in actually implementing it. I have tons of respect for people in the military who refuse to serve once they wake up or diobey orders due to their unethical nature. Yeah, all of those guy, I have nothing but respect for and I wish them the best. The rest of them I couldn't really care less about. Every individual is responsible for his/her actions and their predictable consequences, and I don't really see willful ignorance as a legitimate excuse, or being blinded by arrogance.
And ever since I started questioning the concept of the nation state, I realized patriotism doesn't make a whole lot of sense eigther. What the hell is a country? It's an unnatural construct that evolved and been imposed on humanity over centuries of war, bloodshed, conquest, colonialism, imperialism, and last but not least, centralization of power. So Screw nationalism and screw patriotism. The only thing that makes sense is concern for your fellow man, and just the guy who lives within your borders or neighborhood. It rather ironic how much blood is shed over a stupid concept like a state, and how much bitterness and misery it's responsible for. Anways, most of you probably have no clue what I'm talking about, so I'll end my rant.
EDIT: I just had to get that out of my system and not bottle it up. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about, but probably not many. It requires questioning deeply ingrained subconcious feelings and notions that I don't think most people ever engage in. |
