So what that one thread of star-traveller's had that Iraqi death crap, I dont support it either and if that deserved suspension oh well thats not my discussion. But does that condone closing all his threads? Thats dumb. Many of his other threads have nothing to do with this. I am taking a break from this lame forum . Apart from a few good guys, the rest are just idiots. I'll let you live a happy life of ignorance for the time being until I decide if ever to come back to this hole. |

I think I'm pretty open minded, but I did have a problem with the "happy that Americans are getting killed" thread. There is a lot of death and destruction going on in the region, and no matter who dies, it's horrifying to think someone finds happiness in it. It's one thing to talk about the downfalls of war and the death it brings. It's another to post that you both hope for more deaths and find happiness in it.
If a white supremacist came on here and talked about finding "happiness in the death of blacks" and hoped for more, or a Christian came on here and stated they found happiness in the death of atheists or non-Christians, how would we react? This is a discussion forum, but with those type of threads, there's no discussion to be had. It's simply an emotional, inflammatory statement which brings about nothing more than other emotional, inflammatory responses. |

| ^^ You're right that presentation matters. But I don't support this bull censorship because people find it unpleasant. There's alot discussed and posted here that's equaly if not more revolting and offensive from different perspectives, not that I'm accusing you of anything ofcourse. But I never request banning people or closing threads becuase I'm upset. |

| Yeah, having Lira back even as a temporary measure or not-so-frequent-a-mod would be great. |

Folks here know very well that I strongly disagree with the American invasion into Iraq for a myriad of reasons, but I will NOT agree to any footage or glorification of death in such a manner.
And I think something else needs to be kept in mind - this isn't a democracy on this board. Our "freedom of speech" here in these threads is held as high as being mere guests in the house of Tranceaddict. Being members ("guests") does not entail our voices to be heard with equal weight by any means. That Neo, Swamper, or anyone else has allowed us free speech with equal weight is a priviledge that can be taken away for any reason they see fit. That such a priviledge essentially feels like a democracy of free speech with equal weight with each voice 99.99% of the time does not entail by any stretch of the imagination that it truly is - the gatekeepers can still enforce things whenever the hell they choose because:
a. they have the power to do so
b. it's their site, not "ours"
c. 99.99% they are very reasonable and rational in their decisions
But just because they are almost always reasonable does not entail we can say and do whatever the hell we want. We have to abide by their rules too, and in this case it appeared that Startraveller did not. I've seen people being suspended and/or banned for much less things here over the years, and as far as I know Startraveller is not banned. Again it might seem arbitrary on the surface on how they enforce rules from time to time, but 99.99% I find that they are very reasonable with their rules and enforcement. They obviously have an interest in being reasonable to keep their site popular and running with good volume (as well as trying to be logically consistent with everyone), but it is simply up to us to play and argue within those boundaries that they create, and after over 6 years of being here I've never had a problem with it.
And this is coming from a tree-huggin', hippie librul protestor, no less ;D.
Added in Edit: I like Lira a lot myself, but I'm having a difficult time on what anyone here might be disagreeing with Neo's actions here. What exactly is the problem that anyone here has with his rationale? Personally I think he's being very reasonable as usual. |

I never understood the morbid fascination with people posting pictures, movies or otherwise which showed people getting killed, then gleefully thinking with gross amounts of insensitivity this will elicit some kind of reaction of anger or sadness. They're certainly not posted to support any kind rational debate on the subject and frequently come with a sentence at the bottom that aims to deliberately inflame just that little bit more.
It's not debate, you want to be taken seriously on the subject?
Write about it in detail with a paragraph or two succinctly and why you support such an activity and not just cut and paste a huge lump of press or political propaganda, post up some video's of people getting killed and we'll talk about that instead. |

Actually, it did spark a debate. Maybe you missed it:
