Quebec movies owned the Genies once again for a fourth or fifth year in a row winning 21 out of 27 awards...
Do these guys in Toranna, Deadmonton and Chinkouver even know how to hold a camera and shoot a semi decent movie?

I agree.
Quebec has some amazing movies coming out, and this is coming from an anglo.
Even Hollywood is starting to take notice. The american version of Horloge Biologique is in the making. |

horloge was friggin funny but that was in 2005. I'm just wondering how the americans will improve on it, what will they keep and leave.
The Rocket was amazingly good, Bon Cop Bad Cop for a "commercial" movie owned everything at the release. |

| yeah, Quebec's films are decent but Vancouver is more profitable for ppl working in the industry, far more than the rest of Canada. Hollywood hates Vancouver. |

a US film maker debarking in Chinkouver and hiring some camera monkies doesn't make the film any more Canadian.
come on.:stongue: |

I never said it made it more Canadian, just more profitable for ppl employed by the industry (outside of Canadian producers and a few Canadian actors). Your avatar could use some hummus :p
EDIT: Quebec has always put more money into the arts. Now if you're talking French films vs English films.. Canadian anglos have it tough competing with the beast down south. |

Hollywood North = Vancouver = full of american project, hardly any Canadian ones... WHERE AS...
Quebec has a better market for films due to a variety of issues but mainly because of it's star system which is far more advanced than the Canadian star system.
Quebec has a foundation called SODEC that distributes about 25-45 million dollars a year towards QUEBECOIS films.
We were about to have Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Jim Carrey and a heap of other celebrities in town but THANKS TO THE ING UNIONS... they took their projects elsewhere...
ing bull....
But yes Malek I agree, Quebec films > Canadian films. That's why i consider myself a quebecois filmmaker. :P |

yes, the subsidies are great in Quebec, whereas BC subsidizes the Americans so they will continue to shoot there. It is good for tourism in BC (even though they sometimes make Vancouver into Seattle for geographical purposes), and for extras and the odd local Canadian actor. There are other benefits as well.
Then you gotta couple this with talent imperialism, where the US swallows up all our anglo talent (ie: ppl going south to find fame and fortune). Aside from the monetary reasons listed above, there are some cultural and linguistic reasons as to why Quebec is putting out better films than anglo canada. Quebecers sometimes see things differently, which can also come across as more uniquely. Uniqueness (sp?) sells. |

| Also Quebec gov't puts a lot of emphasis in the arts, media, education.. anything that keeps the language and culture intact. Keeping these institutions healthy goes a long way in doing that. |
