This may be a stretch, but I just thought I'd let you know that there are police units in the US called "Vice Squads". Where I live (Baltimore/Washington DC) I often see cops with special jackets that say "VICE". You know what that word means, right?

That would be the "morality police" of America

youre right. its a massive stretch. i guarantee you there aint any "homosexual units" as part of the vice squad.

and vice police activities that are illegal in almost every country anyway.

I don't know man, sometimes it looks more like a difference of degree, rather than kind.

In some Southern states in the US a man and a woman cannot check into a hotel room unless they show proof that they're married. Or, there's a law that a mailman cannot deliver mail if he sees two male names written on the box. These laws do get enforced from time to time, you'd be surprised.

Remember also that as recently as in 2003 two men were arrested in Texas in their home for having gay sex. This itself was a crime only 4 years ago and they enforced it.

Aside from the sodomy law in Texas (which also included a married couple not being legally able to preform fellatio) which was struck down when it first went up the courts, all these other mentions are either falsehoods or have completely changed.

I know, some people are old fashion here, for instance in the smaller towns when I check in with my girlfriend they like to give us two beds instead of one on occasion, but they do this more of a formality/courtesy to not offend people who would be offended by being offered one bed. If you insist, they don't really care.

As for the mailbox thing, that is surely made up as the US Post is a federal agency not a state thing.

Vice police are units that police primarily against prostitution and gambling in places where it is illegal (most the US).

There are also (get this) special police units against drugs too!
I know shocking!

If you want to get into it, the US has a different police for almost everything, from your university, to your mall, to your border, to your mail, to your alcohol and firearms, to your banks, to your money printers, to the national parks, and state parks, I could go on and on...

oh yeah, because egypt is just a shining beacon of freedom and democracy

Egypt blogger jailed for 'insult'

Abdel Kareem Soliman

Soliman was arrested for his "insulting" blog posts in November
An Egyptian court has sentenced a blogger to four years' prison for insulting Islam and the president.

Abdel Kareem Soliman's trial was the first time that a blogger had been prosecuted in Egypt.

He had used his web log to criticise the country's top Islamic institution, al-Azhar university and President Hosni Mubarak, whom he called a dictator.

A human rights group called the verdict "very tough" and a "strong message" to Egypt's thousands of bloggers.

Soliman, 22, was tried in his native city of Alexandria. He blogs under the name Kareem Amer.

A former student at al-Azhar, he called the institution "the university of terrorism" and accused it of suppressing free thought.

The university expelled him in 2006 and pressed prosecutors to put him on trial.

'Slap in the face'

During the five-minute court session the judge said Soliman was guilty and would serve three years for insulting Islam and inciting sedition, and one year for insulting Mr Mubarak.

Egypt arrested a number of bloggers who had been critical of the government during 2006, but they were all subsequently freed.

Hafiz Abou Saada of the Egyptian Human Rights Organisation called the sentence "a strong message to all bloggers who are put under strong surveillance".

The UK-based organisation Amnesty International said the ruling was "yet another slap in the face of freedom for expression in Egypt".

Fellow blogger Amr Gharbeia told the BBC it would not stop Egyptian bloggers from expressing opinions as "it is very difficult to control the blogosphere".

There have been no reported comments on the sentence from the Egyptian authorities.

that people are all too quick to be criticising the US for problems when those problems are so MUCH smaller than issues much closer to home ;)

ie im tired of the US-bashing that has become so popular. its as though its the only nation with problems  when in fact it is far better than dozens of other nations exisiting today.

Thats quite amazing. MY parents were just on vacation in egypt and they said that Alexandria seem the most liberal of all the cities they visited (manly due to the fact that it supposedly has a lower population of muslims than the rest of the country. Another fun fact about egypt. Tourists there cant really go around as they wish as they need a police escort to travel along with them (ever since those german or swiss tourists got killed a couple of years back). Even a lady (from my country) that is married to an Egyptian and has an egyptian nationality is supposedly not allowed to go farther than 25 km from her place of residence on her own (shes quite a wealthy real estate agent there). By the way if your interested and have spare money. People from europe and america are apparently buying houses like mad down there. The prices have doubled evey year for the past few years apparently. If i had 20.000€ to spare i would buy a house there, then sell it in a couple of years before the bubble burts and make a nice profit. My friend does that and now he drives a new 7 series while i still drive my hyundai.

Anyway, guess ill have to remove Kuala Lampur from my " asian places id like to visit" list. Especially since i was thinking of going with my best friend (she likes to travel and i enjoy asian scenery) and well...in the southern europe (balkans) its not uncommon to kiss someone to greet them or say goodbye (the souther you go the more common it is) even among males (no toungue though, so dont worry if you plan to visit :P).

Oh yeah i have an exams on monday and it 3am and im still awake. Another fresh batch of insomnia less than a week after the last big one finished. I am so ed up its not even funny anymore.

As it happens, I just stumbled upon the following article in today's MSNBC news. I think it proves my point.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17360273/from/RS.1/

Cohabitation without being married is illegal in 7 states

quote:

North Dakota is one of seven states that bar a man and woman from living together "openly and notoriously" as if they were married. Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia have similar laws.

The North Dakota law has been on the books since statehood, and lists cohabitation as a sex crime, along with rape, incest and adultery.

"It's misguided and a stain on North Dakota's Century Code," said freshman state Sen. Tracy Potter, a Bismarck Democrat who has sponsored legislation to repeal the anti-cohabitation law.

The House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing on the bill Tuesday.

Sen. Tim Mathern, a Fargo Democrat, has opposed attempts to repeal the anti-cohabitation law. Those attempts at repeal failed in the last two legislative sessions.

"I think the majority of people think they ought to be married if they're living together," Mathern said.

So, who's ing backward now? :stongue: My opinion still stands: The difference between the US and the Middle East is one of degree, not kind.

again, i will point out that these are a few backward states, and not representative of the entire country. so no, your argument still doesnt hold. and i would like you to dig up some evidence of such laws being enforced in recent times.

I'm bringing this thread back because I have something new to post.

Many of you have accused me of exaggerating. For example, when I mentioned the gay-marriage ban, many of you objected: "This is about marriage, it's not about having homosexual sex, nobody in America is passing judgment on individual lifestyles".

Not quite true. A senior Pentagon figure has publicly called the gay lifestyle "immoral" and - as if that weren't enough - refused to apologize:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070313...e/military_gays

quote:

Senior aides to the chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday that Marine Gen. Peter Pace won't apologize for calling homosexuality immoral — an opinion that gay advocacy groups deplored.

In a newspaper interview Monday, Pace had likened homosexual acts to adultery.

So again I say: How is this public judgment of lifestyles different from what's in the Middle East?

it's not enforced as law, it is only judgment, not execution of that judgment.

and don't start bringing those silly laws back...they are not enforced, unless by enforced you mean made fun of along with silly republican leaders.

* NY State Laws A fine of $25 can be levied for flirting. This old law specifically prohibits men from turning around on any city street and looking "at a woman in that way." * It's statutory rape for a man over 18 to have sex with a female under the age of 18, provided she's a virgin. If she's not a virgin, it is okay, but the said person must be over 16. If both parties are under 18, then the law does not apply.
