Cor Version at Bottom:
My day job is a lab technician at a big ethanol firm. Basically my job is to look for ways to try and get more ethanol out of every kernel of corn.
There are different approaches to solving this problem. I was trying to make the outer layer of the kernel as thin as possible in order to maximize the part of the corn that becomes ethanol.
I took some of the corn home, and for fun I was curious what it would taste like as popcorn. It tasted pretty much the same as any old popcorn.
It wasn't till around the third bag (I was having a Lord of the Rings marathon so we were eating quite a bit) that I noticed none of the popcorn was getting stuck in my gums. Basically the thinner outer layer is completely destroyed in the popping process...
I've since done some research and popcorn is a 4 billion dollar a year business (between theaters and microwave popcorn). My initial business plans shows that I need about 3 million to get my product out the door. I have about $20 at the moment, so I'm looking for investors. PM and I'll send you my paypal.
Cor Version: I've invented popcorn that doesn't get stuck in your gums. I'm gonna be rich! |

I would, I'm altruistic like that, the problem is that not too many people make room for corn in their vegetable gardens (tomatoes and the like seem to have the backyard garden market cornered), so If I went open source then Orville Redenbacher would sell it all royalty free.
I think the easiest thing to do is to just sell my kernel to Orville for a few million, and let them do all the work rather than trying to bring it to market myself. |

I'm a stock investor, and from what I know about business, you need a business plan (3) to even try looking for investors. I for one would not invest anything when there is no legal protection of the new product/idea, nor is there a company to produce/market the product that hasn't even been developed yet. Follow these steps, then start asking for investors.;)
1. Protect your idea.
File a patent. You may want to consult a lawyer on this as there are different types of patent and lots of legal language involved. If you havn't developed the product yet, you can file a 'Provisional Application for Patent'.

2. You need an entity to represent the business.
File a 'doing business as' registration with the country clerk. This entity is the form your business will take. Sole-proprietership or partnership; corporation or LLC(limited liability corp.) You will need to think of a company name, and think hard about it. You will also need a profit motive. I suggest you incorporate because of the tax advantages given to corporations.
Potential fees
1. 90$ general fee
2. Certified copy of Fictitious Name Registration 30$
3. Registration 30$
4. Certified Status 10$
Depending on how you go about filing a 'dba', the fees probably will be different.

3. Type up a business plan.
If you make a solid business plan, one that if followed will actually work, then all you have to do is follow the plan, adjust it when needed. Whether the plan is worthy of a bank loan is up to you. The plan should be good enough so that you could take it to the bank, and be confident in getting a commercial loan. |

Another idea is to think a bit smaller. You're talking about starting your own popcorn business marketing this new wonderful variety of 'corn. Its a good idea but a lot of work. Far simpler would be to patent this idea, build it a bit, and sell it to the existing popcorn companies for seven digits :D |
