(mastering/eq) filtering out below 25hz? - will this improve sound?

hey chaps.

i have been thinking and notice that there are very very few club soundsystems that go below 25hz. and most dont even hit the 30hz mark.

im wondering if it is worth cutting everything below 25hz or should we work down to 20hz incase the track gets played by a system that can cope with the very low bass? will it make much difference?

i notice that i get a lot more headroom when i take away my below 25hz and i can push the audio into the limiter a lot easier without a clipping...

im really looking for the negs and positives of each option. leaving the low in or takin them out?

I usually cut everything below 40hz since it's quite hard for the ear to hear frequencies under that any way.
cybernetica
I know a lot of producers who cut below 20-25 Hz. In theory, this should help getting rid of muddiness. A good kick usually should not have frequency that is too low, because that sound would be too low to be heard and too slow to be felt as a punch.
So I say yea, you can cut below 25Hz.

But you can feel them!

Funktion One soundsystems can go low to about 17hz and if you've heard them you know they sound good, so not so sure about cutting that high up for stuff like kick and basses.

Prob would still leave bass in till @ least 30hz or as cybernetica go lower to 20-25hz

I always cut at 35 :D This gives a nice headroom and a nice punch in the track!

My two cents:

I say leave that step for the mastering engineer..He'll probably have much better equipment..You never know how accurate the eq or filter you use is, so you might be taking out more frequencies then you realise..

What you can do is roll off your bass around 30hz and your kick too if you want, though i just do it with my bass..

I assume you're highpassing each sound anyway..

I roll off around 50 lol

Rolling off is for n00bs. Just make the sounds not go that low in the first place.

....and exactly how are you going to avoid subsonic sounds genius? Pro's know when to roll off and when its pointless but it does clean up the mix. wtf would you need any frequencies below 50 when most club speakers can't even reproduce it? if your using perc. loops why wouldnt you roll off lower frequencies?

Kicks that go that low interfere too much with the bass, and the bass would have to have a fundamental @ 20-30Hz, which is extremely uncommon.

I recommend a brickwall roll-off @ 40-50Hz to remove excess sub-bass and offset.

Oh, and if you think 17hz awesome, i don't agree
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ha9ivn <- sine 17Hz.

And yes, I can go down to about 0.01Hz here, you can see the cone go in and out slowly, its pretty cool.

LOL @ you

And as for the original poster...

40 is too high, though it does depend.

Pass around 20Hz on the master channel.
