My family is irish too and when they moved to canada my great granddad couldn't work as an accountant anymore, lucky timothy eaton (eatons) in toronto would hire any irishman at the time. So there you go, the more you know.

They stole your mittens that's a tad harsh especially considering how cold Canada must be in the Winter etc.

My grandfather moved the family over from Ireland to Liverpool he was promised a job too. When he got to Liverpool there was no job at all. They moved south to find work and eventually found it luckily no problems (due to a friend) in the building trade (construction industry).

i think racism stems for basic human nature. it's pretty natural to be untrusting of things that are different or foriegn to you until experience proves otherwise.

race is just one of many factors people see as differentiating people. some other examples would be social class, religion, etc. sure, unfortunately we all have a lot of preconcieved notions regarding other people, but if we didn't...we'd be pretty stupid.

if i walk down an alley late at night...and i see a dirty white bum...i'm just as cautious as if i see a dirty black bum. it's in your own self interest to be aware of the situation...otherwise what could happen?

we'd probably like to think that race isn't a factor in our society, but of course it is. if i'm a white guy...and i just happen to stumble into compton...am i not going to get hassled? and even if i'm not...shouldn't i atleast be cautious?

the biggest problem with racism today is that people realize that it's carte blanche. if you keep allowing people to use it as an excuse for everything, they are going to continue to. not only that, but especially in america, we have a very diverse culture...to the point of having no cultural identity. america is kinda like a collection of little nation states...and it's that way because that's how the majority of people have choosen to live. not everyone has a problem with it, but a strong majority of people do feel more comfortable within their own racial groups...whether it's white's, blacks, latin american, asians.

if anything i think white americans are the most accepting of other cultures in america. other races are very clicky. i understand why. the same reasons i might feel uncomfortable wandering into the ghetto. but for those that choose to live outside the confines of their race...i think most people are pretty welcoming.

Very well said. It's natural awareness I think from a crime stance people do set themselves up, for an example I see massive group of chavs or rudebwoys in the street and someone walking nearby with their brand new motorola, fair enough it's a free world it's their right be on the phone at any given time but it sets up for being a victim regardless of the situation.

In the states it's very different to where I'm from, for an example I'm more likely to be attacked by a white working class male out in town, however if a group attack me it's likely to mixed (white and black), if I get attacked from a group as whole though their likely to be Asian.

Half Irish and Italian that seems quite a frequent mix in North America.

You can send PKc and co some greasy tacos I'm sure they'd appreciate it. I heard they have to walk 10 miles to fetch water.

According to what I learned in the African American History class I took, black people are the most racist people out there. Built up frustration from generation to generation. Yes, I took a AAH class, yes my teacher was black and yes I was the only white kid in that class and YES I got the highest grade. No I didn't sleep for it.
