same mix as you, except there was a part that was spanish irish.I guess thats where the cheesy potatoes at taco bell come from i suppose.But seriously is the black irish(by that i mean latin)a sizable or decent chunk of the population.I'm curious.Gotta love being Irish/Italian...either way your wife gets a black eye:p |

Yes they reckon some of Spanish Armada got moored on the Irish coast. My Mum's Irish everyone in her family has black hair they get a tan etc, the bloke who is supposidly head of the O'Callaghan clan lives in Barcelona of all places and has a name like Jose.

I don't think all the people who say it have the same reason.
Some people just need an enemy. We don't burn witches anymore, and hunting down the commies is a little out of style. Going after the "racist," however, is very fashionable. Who can say what need this sort of behavior fills: perhaps it's a social or cultural phenomenon, or maybe it's just human nature. But to people prone to this kind of behavior the idea that everyone has a little closet racist hiding inside just waiting to come out is a very attractive one - it supports the idea that no matter how un-racist someone might appear on the surface, you won't really know until you throw them in the lake and see if they drown.
For some others it's merely a manifestation of their self-loathing. Religion is dying. Slowly, to be sure, but it is. Some people believe in original sin - to them it's the great equalizer (it's no surprise they come up short everywhere else). Other people have the same need, but they turn to racism instead. If they spend enough time trying to think about how they're racist, they're bound to come up with something eventually. It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. So they figure that the same must be true of everybody else. It's very convenient for them, they loathe themselves - they loathe all people in fact, though they'd never admit it even to themselves. But they don't loathe anyone quite so much as the person who is confident and secure. It's a comfort for them to think that deep down that person must really be a guilty, guilty racist (what could possible be worse!?)
Others still are just paranoid. This occurs mostly in minorities, although is certainly not exclusive to them. They are terrified of racism but they're also addicted to it. They need something to justify their self-righteousness, after all. It becomes a point for them to focus all their fears and insecurities upon. Rather than facing their problems, they blame the subtle racism they see as surrounding them. Rather than focusing on what they can do to better their own situation, they focus on the illusory crisis of their own ethno-masturbatory fantasies. In so doing they become the statistics that drive their paranoia to further heights.
Lastly there are those peddlers of shame and blame who need racism to justify their own existence. Racism is a career for many of these people - real and imagined. The irony of their profession should not be overlooked. They profess to be crusaders against racism, but they are wholly dependent on racism, or at least the perception of racism, for their own success.
The zealotry with which our society defends itself against "racism" is a religious sort of zeal, rife with all the illogic that accompanies most such crusades. Don't be one of the crusaders. |

That doesn't answer the question though. Becoming a citizen entails national allegiance and becoming a part of the body politic. If someone refuses to accept the country as it stands, with its culture and language, and change themselves to accomodate it, then the state shouldn't have an obligation to accept them.

agree with you there. Racism in Russia is frightening. Attitudes of some of the people are almost reminiscent of the popular attitudes in Germany before Hitler's rise to power. |

I agree. Btw my mother knows english and she graduated from Berkley with a masters in chm eng, so you know shes smart;) But she doesn't hate EVERY american. I hope you didn't get that confused.

That is what is scary. Im afraid that the next Hitler to be will be in Russia or that a huge war will break out between the Russians killing millions of innocent people. Its a real shame.

B/c the gov accomodates by teaching their children the language or they have translators. Its a personal choice some may feel that if they bother learning another language it will take a part of them away.
But the main reason is that they were raised to be stubborn like that. |

mmm...i would say that every "race" has it's racial histories/beliefs. KNOW that i'm not saying everyone in the race is racist.
i'm from a fairly diverse city so i have had a bit of a privilege in not encountering too much negative racial situations.
the only problems that i HAVE had mainly came from one white guy and two or three black people in high school that accused me of being "white". in the case with the white guy, he didn't understand that i said "gee golly gosh!" in a sarcastic manner when i was talking to someone else and that's when he decided to call me "so white".
some of the black people in hs that hung out with the wannabe thugs have that mentality as well and i'm sure some of them have made a comment or two about the way i speak or any other minorites that supposedly "speak white". what the hell does that mean for black people and what does that mean for white people? and just because i don't speak in slang and use ebonics doesn't make me less black. i couldn't believe how ignorant these people were.
when i look at forums on the internet i am astounded with all of the ignorance (from whites, from blacks, from asians, from latinos, etc). and it makes me think that more people have racist beliefs than they appear to be in public. |

That is a definite possibility.
For another example of this general principle, consider the case of "furries." Surely very few people would ever confess to their "real life" friends that they were sexually aroused by cartoon animals, or express a desire to dress up in animal costumes and have sex with similarly attired people. Yet on the Internet there are whole "communities" devoted to this activity. |

| The only way to force people to learn a language is to ensure that they cannot get what they want unless they speak it. If people can get along fine without learning the language of the majority, if they can make friends and hold a job and buy stuff and find a mate without learning it, then they won't learn it. People (excepting linguists and language geeks) learn languages in order to get what they want, not for the fun of it and not because other people think they "ought" to. |
