Basically im 100% new into this. I have been a fan of trance for quite some time but never thought about actually mixing. Ok as of now i have Club DJ Pro which seems to work great but I cant get my headphones to be able to pick up the monitoring which im assuming is because i have an onboard soundcard. But thats besides the point because i have a laptop i want to use to play the music on to be able to hook up the laptop to regular speakers what would i need. Ive heard of poeple using usb to audio than to a powered amp.. Would this give me the ability to be able to monitor on headphones will the music is still being played. OK well all suggestions would help basically teach me something and i am happy..
Thank you very much

Go get Traktor. It is a much better DJ program.
bamfchris
Yea this is the first one i tried. Works for me considering i have nothing to compare it to. But i will try that out. But im more interested in the hardware issues of attaching speakers to a laptop.. while using headphones etc..
Tony Morello
you don't need any extra hardware to dj using your laptop and dj software

try using traktor and something like this

http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P0...1193&t_mode=des

you can select it to output 2 mono signals, one for monitoring and one for master
bamfchris
How would i go about connecting the laptop to amp.. and so forth.. where would this connection actually take place with the http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P0...1193&t_mode=des
Tony Morello
first, you need to understand basic signal flow

outputs to inputs

output on your laptop to the input on your amp

not the other way around

please tell me you understand basic signal flow, otherwise i'm not going to be much help until you've done some learning, sorry just don't have the patience right now to explain the simplicity of outputs and inputs

a headphone splitter is some pretty basic stuff
bamfchris
No i understand completely. I am going to have the Laptop running into the amp.. then on the speakers.. I am basically wondering can a laptop connect directly to the amp. or is there a certain connector.. and to have the master playing over the speakers and the headphones monitoring.. where would the headphones connect and how would i go about this. I understand that splitter but why would i need 2 headphones if i can just monitor one track from another. While master is being played the whole time.
Tony Morello
with that splitter, one output is your headphones, the other is a connector going to your amp (see below), you'll have to select 2 mono outputs in your program (one for your amp and one for headphones, or master out and monitor)

technically speaking you'll need a headphone splitter that splits the stereo signal into 2 mono outputs instead of 2 stereo outputs like i posted

the connector that goes from that headphone splitter (3.5mm/1/8") to whatever your amp input is, be it RCA or 1/4" TRS (phono plug)

should look something like this

3.5mm/ 1/8" to RCA

Ok now that makes sense. I wasn't sure whether amp would connect on the splitter.. thats where i was confused. so basically that goes into your computer and on one split you have headphones and other the amp Does it matter the sound card of the laptop.
Tony Morello
no, a headphone out on your laptop will do just fine for now

bamfchris
OK thank you so much..You were a great deal of help. I hope all is well and i understand correctly i think i do. Well thank you again

I don't think the splitter actually works by splitting the left and right channels into two independent mono channels; it just splits the signal into two identical stereo signals. I've tried this before while trying to set up my laptop and I couldn't get it to work. You could always get a soundcard with two stereo outputs.
