181st scared the crap out of me when I met a girl who lives there right by the A train.
That is really something coming from someone who lived in Kings Cross in London years ago when it was still a total hooker/crack den/hole/scary place.
I had never been up there before and I soon scurried back off to Park Slope :)
If nothing else, the train downtain takes far too long- especially at night. And it's noisy as posted above.
Just...be careful and do your research first! |

im not saying it isnt legit, i know it's legit, but like you said it doesn't go with my system. i had three different dealers, i didnt buy dimebags i bought more than that so i went straight to the supplier. on another note, I was in Argentina during January and i received something i couldnt really identify but it was ing good! it was light and exciting, it even gave me energy! as opposed to heightshaze which made me feel heavy, as if the whole world was coming down on me! haha. |

| I live in WEST harlem, 1 blk from Columbia U graduate schools. Its really nice, near and express and local line, take me 6-7 minutes on the express to get to midtown. It cheap and quiet, but only like 1 block from the UWS bars/restaurants/etc of Columbia U. Really gentrified up here. I always recommend where I lvie because of the price yet its not scary. |

you wanna hear something funny...
about 3 years ago, i use to go uptown dressed in my huge northface snorkel/parka hat to the side, completely ghetto'd out so when i hit my spots i don't look like a cop and i can go pick up my trees...
i went up there again late last year to have dinner and i almost died laughing. i saw a track team stretching on the corner i use to pick up my trees from...left me dumbfounded cuz that area use to be pretty ghetto'd out |

^^hehe yeah I live on Morningside and there is a beautiful park with a waterfall and huge rocks. LOL There are $million+ condos everywhere, yet rent in the brownstones (where I live) is ridiculous cheap (for NYC). My bf's mom used to live here when she grew up and had a hissy fit that there were wine tastings, euro cafes and caviar restaurants. LOL gentrification at its best I guess! You only have to go a few blks to get ghetto but its really quiet around here.
lol I can totally imagine you walking around the columbia area and people being scared of you instead of vise versa. :stongue: |

I have a different opinion of the heights.
I've lived here at 181st and fort washington for about 6 years now.
The rent is very inexpensive up here and the area is really on the rise.
When I moved up here over 5 years ago I came from Rutgers and there were barely any young people. It was for the most part dominican and orthadox jewish. In the past few years a lot of young people have started moving up here instead of moving to brooklyn.
It's a nice area in my opinion. I've never been robbed and have never seen any violence (knock on wood). There are some really good restaurants up here and you have Fort Tryon park which is very very nice and a great place to go bike riding. I also go to the park frequently when it's warm out to play pick up soccer games.
The A train is not bad at all. Gets you to 59th street in under 20 minutes, it's 45 - 50 minutes to west 4th street. However, after 11pm the train goes local until 6am, so during that time it's an annoyance to take the train being that it takes a while to get back home.
I would defintely sublet here if you are looking for a cheap place and you can do this via craigslist. You can sublet a room for $500 a month and the apartments are generally very big and roomy.
With that said, there is not a big social scene up here so if ur looking to have fun up here, it's either going out for dinner or going to the 1 bar that everyone goes to.
If ur just looking for a cheap place to live in manhattan, a place to crash then this is a good place for you.
fyi, my rent is only 1200 for a large 3 bedroom apt. I only pay $300 a month personally :)

Ditto on Harlem. I'm further north, not as many bars & restaurants as where yankee is, but it's GREAT. Nice brownstones, friendly, easy access to the A/C train (tho Jason's right, late nights and weekends can be a bitch so the occasional taxi home from the club is best if you can afford it). And my place (3 BR apt with a 600 sq ft rooftop deck) costs less than most nice 1 BR's in Manhattan.
So if Washington Heights is seeming too far/noisy/scary to you, just look south...

Jason, I expect you won't be there too much longer. Soon it'll be time for you to get a deeeeeluxe apartment in the sky. |

^^can from PACHA is about $11 for me.......SOOO worth the cab than waiting for the train on the weekends....abotu a 35 minute wait/ride. :( PS: I heart harlem. :) I love the sass!!
Jason: I dont think the A train takes even that long on weekdays....I used to live on 145th and to get to penn station (I worked on 31st) it took me about 15 minutes on the express ;) weekends are a whole other story---->:whip:
^^btw after reading both of your reviews I realize that, as happy as I am with my rent, living next to columbia is kicking my ass.....I pay around $1500 for a 1 br (everything included, even cable/internet). ah well I love it. |
