How is that area of New York City?
I am planning on moving to NYC for 4 months probably after the summer I am trying to find a good place in the city for cheap and what not. Debating on if I should live on my own or find a room mate.
Any suggestions? |

Washington Heights is not THAT bad. A lot of spanish speaking people, great views of the river, also MUCH bigger apartments if you find the right place.
I lived on Riverside Drive (just under wash heights)once which was awesome. I had a HUGE place for MUCH cheaper rent and a fantastic view of the GW bridge. My friend lives in WH and has a huge place as well on riverside. Cons: I had only one local train which takes about 15-20 minutes to midtown, MUCH longer on the weekends (usually took me 45 minutes plus to get home on the train...I always had to pay for cabs! :(). If you moved up further (168th) there is an express but I was not near there. Also really nice parks and a bit quieter than midtown and such.
really confusing about what streets are ghetto....its literally like... one street: ghetto, the next street: nice places.... and so on so forth because of gentrification.
I think I covered what I can think of right now. |

Honestly, try to avoid the Heights. Try every single neighborhood in Manhattan and some Brooklyn and some Queens before you come here. I know this cause I lived in The Heights for a long time (4 years). I just recently moved and in every single possible way it is better.
It is by far the loudest neighborhood in the city, so if you are a light sleeper, KEEP OUT!. All the people there think they are Daddy Yankee so they feel the need to blast their music through their cheap and fake JBL car speakers. Especially during the Summer this place gets crazy and you hear very loud music coming from the street at 3 AM.
Also, some of my friend have been mugged by the locals but that would only happen if you are walking by yourself late at night of course. BTW, some people did get shot on my street, someone stabbed some kid (All this during the Summer). Kids tend to go crazy during the summer and since they have nothing to do (school's out) they get into trouble.
Places are much bigger but they are old and very low quality. If I were you I would really try any other place before The Heights, by the way, the higher you go the nastiest it gets. I was by 187th. :disbelief
Good luck and only move to The Heights if you have tried every single other place before. |

Hahaha! I have a funny story about that area....I went to meet a friend there and my other friend came along and she drove. She had never been there before. She parks her car and left the window wide open. I did not even notice. When we came back a few hours later the car was completely ransacked and whatever they did't want to steal was scattered all over the ground. They tried to steal the car too because we saw some damage to the ignition but they were unsuccessful.
Anyway if I had to live there I would but if I had a choice I wouldn't. It's not that great of a neigborhood but it's not so bad that I wouldn't set foot into the area.
I confirm what Brian says regarding the tree's tho...premium quality! |

the heights are fine. all you need is to excercise some basic common sense as you would in most other densely packed urban areas. if this was 15 years ago it'd be a different story, but nowdays the buppies, yuppies, hipsters and bobos are all rapidly gentrifying the place. two sundays ago, the nyt had a feature-length story on the transformation of the heights.
and btw, once you cross dykman, you're in inwood, def. not "scarier" than the heights, so the higher #s/higher crime theory is patently false...
shouts to st. spyridon on 178th & wadsworth, and the block on 183rd between audobon & st. nicks where much of my family lived since the '20s. :)
for a short-term rental/sublet try craigslist (as was already suggested) or something like roomates.com |

me too lol - all the major greek churches in ny are in a basketball league, so i was always up there playing ball with one of my closest friends who was on the team.
i always liked the heights - had some of the craziest nights of my life up there (not counting having to stay indoors during the riots or beefing with netas and ddp =P )
for the trivia geeks, the heights are home to the heighest point of elevation in manhattan (bennett park) and the deepest subway stop (191st on the 1) [i think i may have mentioned this once before on here, oh well]. |

i'm from brooklyn homey =P
netas were ill - they were the bottom-feeding multi-cultural gang, whereas the kings and ddp (dominicans don't play) had stricter ethnic purity bylaws. |
