You can have different operating systems along with Linux and anyway every distro got thousands (yes, thousands) of progs like the ones available for winblows (4 free).
Personally if i really like a win prog or can't find a correspondant linux prog i just reboot in win ... that's all ;) |

ok...i think that i'm going to install linux and winXP. i'm not sure how to do this. i'm not much of a computer wiz but i'll explain what i think i know and maybe you guys can tell me where i went wrong.
1. reformat HDD
2. delete partitions?
3. create separate partition
4. make both partitions bootable
5. set them active
6. uhmmm...install operating systems
question: how do i do that from a CD if i've just reformatted my HDD? how will my CD drive operate. wouldn't i need the CDrom drivers? where do i get the CD drivers from and how do i install them?
7. reboot?
ok...what have i done wrong? |

Easy mate, first you have to choose which Linux distro to install.
I suggest Mandrake ( www.mandrake.com ) 'cause it's easy, friendly and powerfull.
Just go there and you'll find a load of info on how to install and set your box alone or along with other operating systems ;)
Good luck! :p |

just a few questions. i went here:
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/...e/Mandrake/iso/
do i need to download all of the files?
also...i downloaded the readme file...and it said avoid downloading on a 56K connection. i can only assume that the reason is that it takes forever.
i am going to use gozilla to download the file(s). in the readme file it said to make sure that the files are downloaded in binary mode and not ascii. what mode does gozilla use to download files? |

WEll i understand and agree that XP is much better cuz it will work with amost any driver you need.. BUT i'm a bit afraid of using it my self. as for the fact that it's still new and hasn't been fully tested.. by man.. i know it has..
but you never quite know
2000 i use right now.. and i'm happy with it.. :clown: |

it doesnt, only uploading works binary and ascii, downloading is just downloading to my knowlage. ill get someone clever to post here and confirm! lol! |

| ok yet again my attempt at helping someone with something technical turns to manure. basically all .exe files should be downloaded in binary, download managers should auto dectect this, ive never seen this option in GetRight, so i'd guess that go!zilla sorts it automactialy, .txt's in ascii, rest in binary. |

here is the coup dunse guide to installing after format of windows:
Insert a win 98 boot disc, reboot and when it asks, say start without cd-rom support, it'll take you to dos, type format c: (if you wish to remove any partions or create new ones, type FDISC, and follow onscrean.)
to install win 2k on that, totally blank hdd, insert the first win 2k disc, and reboot, i cant remember if it'll ask for cd-rom support or not, if it does, say yes. when asked to choose a partion, select c and say to format in NTFS file system, (this is why NT is so stable)the cd-rom is autodected and setup as one of the basic functions, after all the boot discs, just keep following on from there! formatting is more worry than skill.
3 posts in a row, ill be called a spammer soon :p
if u want something more detailed, ill pm you a decent guide, ive had major pc headaches so ive done this loads so im, good at it now! lol! |

thanks for all the help. i have reformatted and created partitions years ago. i have also installed windows...i just couldn't remember exactly what to do if i did not have the use of a CD rom. i'm guessing that i have to creat a boot disk before i reformat.
i've have never installed 2 operating systems on one computer though. i'm not quite sure how to do that. i don't know if you have to have to separate partitions...one for each operating system or not.
p.s. - coup...who made your sig for you? i need to get one made. |

| I won't vote here because I still use Win98, I don't like either 2000 or XP - it takes about 1 gb on hdd, that's so much, and the profits aren't worth it. |

XP is a superset of win2k + other stuff
hence it has to be better :) |
