Lotto woes show LCBO needed: McGuinty
April 03, 2007
Canadian Press

Premier Dalton McGuinty says the recent lottery scandal shows corner stores shouldn't get the power to sell Ontario wine and micro-beer.

McGuinty says that power should remain in the hands of trained professionals at the LCBO and the Beer Store.

A Liberal backbencher is introducing a private members bill today which would give convenience stores the power to sell homegrown wine and micro-beer.

But McGuinty says the recent lottery scandal – where lottery winnings were claimed by an inordinate number of shop clerks – shows the danger of giving thousands of clerks too much power.

He says it's important to maintain the security of Ontario's liquor system.

Conservative Bob Runicman says the LCBO agency stores – which are located in rural convenience stores – show shop clerks can be trusted to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors.

:conf: Obviously they're doing fine - they're a government-sanctioned monopoly.

I wished Costco would start selling Beer and Wine like they do in States...buying liqour in mass is dirt cheap :D

We should've just made drinking age 16 like in europe (most countries at least) and not having a monopolized control system (LCBO, beer store).

It would make things a lot easier, and we would have a lot less teens getting retardedly drunk every day. I've always wondered why teens in europe are more mature and dont drink like animals every weekend...now i know why! they don't abuse their limitless access to booze ...

This is such a load of crap. That reasoning makes no sense.

Some variety store owners committed a crime unrelated to alcohol.

Therefore no variety store owners are responsible enough to sell alcohol.

WTF

In Cyprus where my rents are from my 13 year old brother can buy booze and cigarettes at the local periptero (convenience store) without any issues.

The reasoning behind them not allowing booze/wine in local stores here disgusts me beyond compare.

forget that Chris, how about walking around in a park or chilling on a beach with beer bottles, and not hiding from anyone? my friend and I would always pop down to a local periptero for a cooler or two and go chilling somewhere
