Is life predetermined?

So I'm sitting here chatting with my friends and we're trying to figure out if life has us all on our own paths and theres nothing you can do to change it? For example, everything you do is already predetermined by 'someone/something/some force' and even when you think you dodged it, you're still and always be on that magical path of determination.
Then we can get into the argument of altering ones path in life, but then again, if life is actually predertmined, then 'altering' is just a false sense of hope?
By the way im sober just incase you were wondering lol |

I just don't believe in any kind of "superior being/force" or whatever you want to call it. You make your own choices in life, and create your own path.
I do wonder how you think it could be predetermined, and have any proof that it could even be possible? I just don't buy it. |

I say No, but I can't really explain why.
If ones path was already "written in the books" or whatever, I don't think we'd have the free-will that we do. We wouldn't really need it.
A train travelling on its traintracks doesn't really need to think about where to go next. There's only one path for it to go, no thinking required.
Just say you're poor, and in the books its written that later in life you're rich. That means that despite the decisions you make, you will be rich later on in life. Even if you spend all of the money you have, don't invest, don't win the lottery, don't have a carrer, etc.
I dunno. I havne't had much sleep and yea... |

I believe that everything is pretty much predetermined, and any 'choice' we make is just a result of the situation we're in and the experience we had at that point. if you ever say you would have gone back and done something differently, it's only because you're pissed you ended up failing at making the choice that would have resulted in the most pleasure and least pain - which was what you attempted to do with what was available at the time.
but if you wanna get nuts i can talk to you about how time travel would mean an infinite number of dimensions (IF it is ever possible), chaos and that kind of stuff, but get me a blunt first :) my friend and i made a diagram in our heads of how we think universes would be connected and .. i think we made up a 3d plane with a line on it that represents one's life and the color of the line at each point represents time :S it was an insane sesh, one i wish i had recorded haha.. it was probably all BS but fun to think about
edit after reading some of the other posts:
yeah the problem with believing the first part of what i said is that it makes us feel like there's no point in doing anything.. the point isn't that everyone has their destiny or whatever and we will ultimately have some label as 'successful' or something that is predetermined... it's much more simple than that.. it's just that the events of one day determines what will happen the next day, replace day with second, and then instants, you get what i mean? :S |

life is full of mysteries, this is a thread of opinion obviously
theres good points for predetermination and for free will, its all a matter of what you personnaly believe
me? i believe that life is "somewhat" predetermined and oneself has the opportunity to alter many events
i could go deeper into discussion but its after 12am, brain aint functioning! |

So who exactly predertermines our lives for us??? and what is the reason behind each choice? and are other animals (speices) also living a predertermained life or is it just us?? |

On the first day God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too long to be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give you back the other ten."
So God agreed.
On the second day God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks and make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?"
And God agreed.
On the third day God created the cow. "You must go to the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves, and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years."
The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty and I'll give back the other forty."
And God agreed again.
On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. I'll give you twenty years."
Man said, "What? Only twenty years? Tell you what, I'll take my twenty, and the forty the cow gave back, and the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back, that makes eighty, okay?"
Okay," said God, "You've got a deal."
So that is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, and enjoy ourselves; the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren; and the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you. |

strings theory anyone? :wtf:
its a really interesting theory that says that we live in a world of 11 dimensions yet we only see 3 of them because the rest overlap n such? and that there is an INFINITE number of universes that are all connected and we are all in them except we live "different lives"
its ed up stuff |
