I've been going to Japanese lessons this academic bit, so I can read and speak a bit.

Apart from one family who I used to know, I don't know any Japanese people over there. I have a half-Japanese friend here who I'm going to ask tons of stuff to before I go.

Yeah, hasn't quite dawned on me yet really.

A VERY cheesey video about the JET programme, but imformative nevertheless - 316mb, right-click and 'Save as' -

Everything is expensive. About $10 for a meal at McDonalds, etc. I would suggest you bring some of your own food.

used to live in tokyo and i go there once every 1-2 years and the cost of living is higher, especially in tokyo, but its not even close to 10 dollars a meal at mcdonalds. you can eat cheap too and cheap food in japan is still good if you go to the right places. if you 'bring your own food' and just ate american food during your stay there then you need to be shot

Money is always a bitch when it comes to these things. :(

Then next summer will be very fun for you. I doubt I'll have time to visit Osaka but I'll definitely visit Tokyo for a weekend or more during my trip.

As for the English programs... I'm actually not too sure whether there are 2 of them. I know there's JET (which includes ALTs, CIRs and SEAs) but that's about it. I've never heard of NOVA. I'll look into it, though.

Sorry about the English response. I'm replying from a computer that doesn't have the Asian fonts character pack.

Ya, well the site is http://www.ageha.com/, but they have a schedule of who's coming, which for the most part is all in English. You have to be over 20 to get in, so bring some form of ID, passport should be just fine (but don't lose it!!!), I dunno if Drivers License would work...

If you want to know how to get there go to the website, and they have a map that is really helpful! It's not too far from the Shinkiba station, or you can take the bus service from Shibuya. The club has siiiiick sound system, and good lighting rig. PvD is stopping by in June 2nd so you should go!

You can buy the tickets from here though:

Probably won't show up for a little bit, if you need help, PM and I can show you how to do it over AIM or something.

Aha, that's what I thought.

But yeah, I've dreamed about doing the exact same thing

Came back at the end of last year from a teaching stint, initially at ECC (conversation school) then at a junior high school in central Tokyo. JET program is ok, but they'll place you in smaller areas, Kyoto being the biggest of those you listed, methinks. You'll have fun, but if you're after the big off intense city experience then get to Tokyo. Osaka is ok, but I preferred Tokyo although I s'pose it is a case of user preference.

Do yourself a favour and learn, off heart, reading and writing hiragana and katakana. It will make life so much easier and they're fairly easy to memorize.

Expensive? Like with everything, some things are, some aren't. McDonald's was pretty much on par with what I pay in Australia (although Japan Macca's is somehow so much better). Eat as much food as you can, don't think twice about what it looks like and don't ask what it is until after you've had most of it. There is some awesome food around but it can look slightly odd at times.

Clubbing, head to Tokyo. Womb is nice but can be overcrowded depending on the event. Ageha is huge and well worth the trip out during the summer months. Yellow is not bad, though the sound can be crap at times. Unit is more of a live act venue and thus not really laid out like a club but still has its fair share of acts. There are a few others dotted around but they're the main players.

Unless you're on a tourist VISA (which I doubt, coz you're in the JET program), don't buy a rail pass. I don't actually think you can as it's only available to tourist VISA's anyway afaik. As for ID, you'll be issued with a gaijin card, which is a hellova lot easier to carry round than your all important passport.

You'll have a blast, enjoy!

Completely not true.. They actually have 7 or 8 100¥ items like milkshakes and burgers, which are substantially cheaper than their counterparts in Canada. And mcdonalds is not expensive here in canada.

I found food to be pretty much reasonably priced, even where I stayed in ginza (known to be a pricey spot).

Just found out I'm going to be in Iwate prefecture in north-east Japan. Anyone been up there?!
