Keep an eye out for Burning Rangers, Guardian Heroes and Fighters Megamix too. All great games.
P.S. I have Sega Rally and Daytona Championship Edition available. Make me an offer ;)
I also have BUG..one of the first ever 3D platformers, and "D", one of the first horror games. I've got around 10 more in storage that I can't think of and will probably never play again since I have such a huge backlog of PS1 and PS2 games. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig them out.
I'll definitely consider taking you up on Sega Rally and Daytona ;) Just outta curiosity, what would be a fair rate to charge for those two?
I remember playing BUG! back in the day, a very fun game that I think would stand the test of time beautifully. Never played 'D' before, but I remember hearing about it. When and if I'm interested in seeing your catalog, I'll let you know !

yeah but when the psx came out, they really forced the 3d thing, it got a lot bigger at the time, i mean even command & conquer had to be updated to 3d models instead of sprites before sony would have it iirc. hard to say it's a strength i reckon they even continued that trend with the dreamcast as well i think.
Truth. When the 32/64-bit console war began, the third dimension was all everybody wanted. This is where Saturn's weakness really bled through. Not saying Saturn wasn't capable (just play Panzer Dragoon and see for yourself), but it definitely wasn't as up to the task as the PSone and N64. 2-D gaming really was done, with the exception of fighting games, which is the only thing the Saturn had going for it with its superior sprite rendering abilities. Like you mentioned, that's hardly a weapon against the competition.

The Saturn was also extremely difficult to program for, and a lot of manufacturers went the Sony route for this reason alone.
Another true point. I read about this not too long ago. Apparently Sega installed not one, but two CPU's underneath the Saturn's hood. The hard part was developers learning how to program games to make them work simultaneously. Fighting games were the only example of this architecture really being convenient; the designers could assign one CPU for one fighter, the other for the other.
But for just about every other game, this concept became such a pain in the ass that developers either chose not to deal with it (by programming just one of the CPU's for the entire game, resulting in lackluster performance (explains why the PSone version of a game was always better than the Saturn if it was available for both)), or half-assed both CPU's in an absurd way that the game ended up to be trash in the end (House of the Dead).
Sega commented that if programmers really had learned how to use the Saturn architecture properly, the system would have been capable of some amazing . Yu Suzuki claimed that the unreleased Saturn version of Shenmue was the ONLY game that truly demonstrated the system's power...and it never saw the light of day (on the Saturn I mean, we all know of the Dreamcast version).
Too bad.

The Saturn definitely had more potential. Only Sega seemed to be able to take advantage of it though, with amazing looking games like Virtua Fighter 2, etc. Check out the Saturn version of Shenmue (before it was cancelled)..
Christmas Nights looked darn good too (video doesn't do it justice)

id just run an emulator. there's no shame in stealing software that is no longer supported imo.

If you got 200$ to blow, get it. Best shooter ever.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is a great game, although I don't know if it's worth the $200 it regularly goes for on Ebay... and I say this as a biiiig fan of SEGA RPGs (as you can already see from the avatar).
NiGHTS - Every Saturn owner needs this game, it's simply magical. Read a FAQ or the instruction book to learn the "proper" way to play, or you will be missing out on a bit.
Guardian Heroes - 2D beat-em-up from Treasure, with experience levels and tons of enemies on screen at a time.
Astal - a slow, deliberate sidescroller with some amazing 2D visuals.
Tengai Makyo IV: The Apocalypse - Amazing RPG that takes place in a parody of America at the start of the 20th century, Japanese only, although a walkthrough exists :(
Shining Force III - Awesome SRPG, but only the first of 3 chapters came out in America. I still need to get this one.
Radiant Silvergun - The holy grail for shmup fans. If you have a Saturn, you know of this one. Lives up to the hype for me, although shmup fans are divided on whether or not it does.
Mr Game+Watch
Magic Knight Rayearth is another fun Saturn game... pretty easy ARPG, with pretty sprite graphics and decent (for the time) voice acting.

I agree with this. Are we allowed to discuss emulation on TA? Is that breaking rules? I know its illegal, but like you said, we aren't stealing profit since the companies are no longer making money on that software.

I think you posted that video a little while back. Impressive as all hell. Of course not by today's standards, but rewind back to 1998, and that is absolutely jaw dropping.
And Christmas Nights? Was that a sequel?

I'm not sure about the $200 part hahaha, but that video was ing nuts. When it came to non-3D games, the Saturn really did kick all kinds of ass.
And I'm lovin the list G + W, some real good ones on there. I have a demo disc with a video for Astal on it...it looks trippy and gorgeous all at once. I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy.

Christmas Nights was a special game released around Christmas. Sega sent it to everyone who registered their copy of Nights.. It is short, but got really good reviews.
As for emulators, there are no good Saturn ones..even today. The system was so hard to program for that people still haven't managed to make a decent copy of the OS. I always thought emulators ruined some of the "magic" of playing games on the original system anyway. I downloaded a few NES roms a while back, and it just wasn't as much fun as playing on that old 2-button rectangle controller. :D

Oh absolutely. Nothing is like playing the game on the system it was meant to be played on.
...But it beats spending $200. :stongue:

i thought as long as you had the original carts having the roms was fine?

+ you hype the system like crazy
+ pull the rug under from your retailers by releasing 4months early at the same time losing customer confidence
+ rush bonafide potential killer app franchises like daytona early
+ slop a bunch of chips together calling it a 32bit system
