"misplaced" is a funny word...
My father once got the bright idea of tossing a pack of bottle rockets into a bonfire. I was walking to opposite direction, about 100 yards away, when one whizzed out straight for the back of my head. Took me down. I'd imagine it would have been ing hilarious to watch, but I was like 11 years old, so everyone laughing at my pain really made it worse.
:p

I played (American) football for about 10 years, and for the first eight I never suffered anything more serious than a dislocated thumb, which I managed to play an entire half through. Then during my junior year of high school I was playing on the defensive line for the last game of the season (typically played fullback, but I wanted a crack at defense for the last game). There was a play action pass play, where the quarterback faked a handoff to the right and rolled out to the left. I took my first step towards the fake, and as the offensive lineman on that side came to meet me, I realized it for what it was and cut back to the left. At the moment I planted on my left to cut back, I got hit at hip level from the right, and below the knee by the offensive lineman on the left who was executing an (illegal) cut block. My knee buckled immediately -- it felt as if a bullet had shattered my kneecap.
I hit the ground, and people tell me I cried out, but I don't remember - I just remember rolling around on the ground repeating over and over "my knee, my knee". At some point I rolled over onto my side, and the knee snapped back into place, which hurt 10 times worse. My coach finally reached me well after it had snapped back in, and the pain was starting to subside into shock, so I was calming down. He helped me up, and had me hobble off the field. The game ended shortly after (there had only been 1:21 left in the 4th quarter), and instead of offering to help, the entire team ran back to the locker room to celebrate. I managed to get back on my own, and it wasn't until I was the last one left in the locker room that I realized I wasn't going to be able to get to my car and drive home on my own. So I had to get someone to call home so my parents could come pick me up. Went into the ER the next morning, but didn't sleep a wink the night before because every time my knee even twinged it was unreal pain. Turns out I dislocated my knee, partially tore my MCL, and cracked my tibia.
As if that wasn't bad enough.
I took my senior year off football, but decided to give it a go in college. I made it through conditioning two-a-days just fine, and was actually playing better than ever (I'd moved to Tight End). During the first contact practice of the year, I was blowing away our varsity linebackers in every drill. So the next time I'm up, coach calls the attention of the team to me and some stud linebacker to motivate everyone else to play hard. The whistle blows, we go at it, I immediately knock him back two feet, but when we re-engage, my knee completely buckles. I go down with him awkwardly on top of me, and apparently before I hit the ground I yelled "oh god it's out". Again, rolling on the ground a bit, but this time nothing happened. The trainer reached me and cut back my knee pad. The entire team groaned, because my knee cap was about 120 degrees rotated from where it should have been. It was literally on the lateral side of my leg.
They called an ambulance, and it wasn't until we went over a particularly nasty bump in the road that it snapped back into place and the pain hit. It was pretty awful. I almost never tear for pain, but man, I couldn't help it. The entire trip to the hospital was really rough. I knew I'd dislocated it, but my idiot doctor didn't think so. They ordered X-Rays, which were inconclusive, so they sent me home with a day's worth of painkillers. I got back, went to the training room at school, where they told me I'd probably dislocated it (duh), and maybe did something to the MCL again, so they ordered an MRI. Had that done a couple days later, turned out I'd not only sprained the MCL, but had broken my FEMUR as well. The hospital had said I'd only miss a few days of practice. The training room, after seeing the MRI, told me I'll never play football again.
I'm pretty damn lucky to compete in track and field still I guess.
It was a nice welcome to college though. I'd been in Ohio for three whole days.

Haha, nah, I would've played for four years and graduated college with a 1.0 GPA and a job at McDonald's to pay off tuition loans.
I'm much happier going to grad school next year.
:p
