Proper progressive trance (pg. 2)

yeah i agree, most of what I posted is not progressive trance: the threadstarter listed a lot of tracks I personally would not call progressive trance, as I said before the list..

a lot of what i posted is atmospheric tribal house, dark tribal, and progressive house

Mainly though I posted a list of things that sounded similar or had a similar vibe to the list the threadstarter originally provided. I don't think anyone should be limited by things like genre - so a lot of these tracks might appeal to threadstarter though they are sometimes very different

sorry if it causes any confusion. i'm not trying to preach a definition or anything like that, just to suggest similar sounds to the original list

Yeah I understand, sorry I didn't catch that. But I just get confused with what progressive trance is and what progressive house is. A lot of the progressive house I like, I would consider "trancey", mainly because it is more melodic than some other prog house that is more rhythmic or almost electro-like (esp nowadays).
nefardec
yeah who really knows - progressive house has many meanings to different people.

i'm going to say this at the risk of appearing somewhat ignorant because my knowledge is patchy: here's more or less how I see it. if anyone wants to add/fix things be my guest.

I think you can see the different areas of "progressive house" as more or less clouds of similar sonic elements that bleed into one another. I will try to highlight the major 'areas'.

In general, I think progressive house is characterized by the explicit presence of emotional overtones. Ok, sure every form of music has emotional content, but I think progressive house more or less puts it on a pedestal and the tracks are more about the emotion than things like the actual sound (minimal), rhythm, melody/harmony (trance), etc. I always feel there is something a bit ethereal and dreamy about it but it gets manifested in many different ways - it can be dark and deep (sultan), it can be bright and sparkly (eelke kleijn), it can be warm and broad (baroque/tilth).

you have the sort of early 2000s yooshi/shinichi progressive house sound which is distinct, tribally, atmospheric, lush. Sultan & Tonedepth, dousk, g-pal, loudeast, generally dark and grooving. the newere stuff is a lot more melodramatic, whereas earlier stuff was just very dark and just rolled along without making a huge fuss

kult of krameria, d-formation, javith & salazar are some who are still doing it

you have sasha esque progressive house from like 2003 moody, dark,
kosmas epsilon, some quivver, spooky, etc

then you have Baroque progressive house sound which at times kind of crosses over with the sort of "progressive" played on trance radio like ETN.fm. some stuff on audio therapy. d-nox and beckers, benz & md, thomas penton, shiloh, luke chable, etc, a more maximal attitude towards sound, decadent (BAROQUE just about sums it up) generally more uplifting and bright, (melo)dramatic

there is the progressive that comes out on labels like Tilth, Toes In The Sand, etc, which is generally more atmospheric, decidely less funky. Also very melodramatic

you also have the sort of twinkly, uplifting progressive house like eelke kleijn and 16bl, newer spooky.

feel free to criticize me for mass generalizations haha - i know I have made a few, but hopefully this is helpful

When I hear "proper progressive trance" I think like oakenfold or sasha in the last half of the 90s

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought. But proper progressive trance is still hard to find IMO. There's stuff like what Markus Schulz has produced, remixed, which people call "McProg" but to me, it's progressive trance. He does put in epic stuff, but I couldn't really think of another well known DJ who would play stuff that has a more progressive trance type sound (with progressive house thrown in).

To me, what progressive trance is..is slower, with some similar progressive house sounds, but uses kickdrums, bass, melodies that are more like trance. The melodies are repeated throughout with a shifting or building structure (it just builds and builds) with some minor breakdowns. I guess it would be the Sasha & Digweed sound pre 2000, but there hasn't been anything quite the same since (except maybe now "some" of Markus's music he plays, the more melodic prog house guys like Snake Sedrick, and perhaps the prog-psy stuff on Digital Structures).

The music on Tilth, Toes In The Sand sound which I love, is largely noted as "progressive house", but it sounds so similar to trance IMO..like a mixture of that. The other stuff is also trance-like, with the tribal-like beats and atmospherics, but when I think "progressive house" I think of the early 00s Nick Warren and Sasha & Digweed sound, like on their CD "Communication"...funky and tribal type stuff (think Killahurtz's "West On 27th"). I guess I just get confused with genre classifications, it drives me crazy....

I think he wanted Progressive, rather than Progressive Trance.

Thanks for your suggestions all, I see I have some searching to do.

I already own GU 009 ;) Same for 013 and 014 and the Northern Exposure series.

Most of the obvious stuff I already have, like the stuff done by the likes of Quivver, Breeder, Tilt, Evolution, Tarrentella & Redanka, BT, etc. I'm looking for those hidden gems, maybe I should've been clearer about that.

No, I'm specifically looking for progressive trance tracks that are similar to the records I mentioned in the first post. No progressive house and no mcprog.

IMO, the tracks I listed almost exactly define the 'real' progressive trance sound. Your list contains a lot of nice tracks, but they're not really what I'm looking for. Too much 'housey' stuff.

I know what you mean bro, but it's really ing hard to explain to others. The type of sound you're looking for though is also IMO the definition of progressive trance. The darker driving stuff, the way it used to be back in the late 90's.

Only way for me to listen to this stuff is to listen to releases from that time, Northern Exposure 3 - CD2 is one of the gems imo. Diggers really hit the nail on the head for that mix.
