biz: i can off and get my work done just as good as the next guy is that is stressing hard over a deadline that is 3 weeks away. the more you make a job personal, the more it stressful it becomes, and the longer it takes to do that same job. having fun at your job is KEY to getting work done quickly and efficiently. if your not having fun your spending time dreading work and doing other things and procrastinating.

I think that retail gets stuck with these power hungry managers. Typically those managers are people who have been working for the company for way too long and they get the military mentality. I was treated like trash when I did that job so I should treat my employees like crap. Typically those managers will end up a 60 year old burnt out store manager at burger king with no money, pension, or life.

You do not have to work for any company that does not fit for you. That means if your boss is a dick, or your ethics/morals don't agree with the companies then QUIT! There are jobs out there with bosses that don't stand over your shoulder, or ask what your doing every 30 seconds. I give you a hint though very few of them work at video rental stores!

I'm not really sure how to respond to this. Having worked in retail for over 3 years I see where you are coming from. For the most part managers are s who think they are CEO's of a major corporation, and you have to work like a slave for peanuts. However I have also witnessed firsthand where employees have way too much fun, and they think stuff is getting done, but in reality nothing's getting done. I guess the only thing I can say is, enjoy your fun, because once you get a real job you'll be screwed.

I worked retail for 7 years. Worked my way through university in a grocery store. I agree most of the dicks think they are the CEO. It is also true that there are a lot of good managers in retail but most of them leave for bigger and better things. But I still disagree with you you can have fun at work and get things done. Yes there are people who just the dog and nothing gets done. Getting a real job does not mean that you have to become a robot who only thinks about work from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. If you cant have any fun at work you have the wrong job and should be working elsewhere.

With any business you have to keep your ear to the customers & fix things when customers start complaining. Corey was being a good manager by cracking down.

Moving on, Corey becomes strict on us because some snobbish customers began to complain.

Then for some reason, the regular customers started to become pricks. Whatever... it just wasn't the same anymore.

hmmmmm. I guess its all the customers fault, cause they are all snobs & pricks. Not the jerkoff employees.

I can't explain how we actually managed to keep the store in tip-top shape with all the stupid things we did.

you prolly cant explain it cause the store was not in tip top shape.

And, we KNEW we were doing fine cause the District Manager never complained.

im sure the district manager did say something. thats why corey cracked down. And if the district manager didnt complain then he/she wasnt doing thier job.

Keep in mind that our crew was basically the type that talked alot, goofed off every minute we possibly could,

No wonder why your jumping from job to job at gas stations, video stores & movie theaters.

Exactly. District managers don't complain to the associates, they complain to the manager(s) who then may or may not tell the associate that the regional director is pissed. If your manager was breathing down your neck and your customers were bitching at you, obviously there was something wrong, but you were just a little too blinded by your, "Oh, we're having fun and I think everything looks fine," mentality.

I would've said, " yeah dude, way to stick it to the man! " if you had an assload of just cause for taking action like that, but you didn't, so I won't.

JonSun pretty much nailed it.

ive had a total of 3 managers that were cool when i worked retail. yes thats right 3. the other 20 or so were total nazi managers.

jonsun: nailed it.
jake: haha yeah. they always say something to the store manager.

on a sidenote. although you guys were obviously out of line the manager shouldnt have been a nazi about it all. there is a fine line of being a manager, doing your job as a manager and being a hard liner that is just being a dick about it all. there is more than 1 way to go about it all but being a hardliner is not ever the right way. it always backfires. maybe not immediately but at some point it does.

As a sidenote, I hate working retail. Why I'm taking a supervisor position that I was offered is beyond me.

But yeah, RJ, that's retail life. Get used to it or get out.

Sounds like you and your friends were unprofessional, when the manager tried to address customers complaints about your behavior, you screwed him, leading to the demise of the store. That's nothing to be proud of. I hope you grow up and eventually figure out what you did was wrong. Maybe one day you'll be the uncool manager who's spoiling all the fun of your 'badass' teenage slacker subordinates.

edit: I just read through the thread

jobs may be annoying, but screwing off all day isnt work....

c0r version: 'we' didnt do , 'we' couldnt keep our jobs at a ing video rental store.
