Question for you minimal heads out there....

Why do you like minimal? What makes it so good? I know I can ask this in the MD forum, but I don't check it at all and I wanted a local opinion on it.
From the live sets I've listened to (especially Hawtin), I honestly can't get myself into the minimal bandwagon at all.
edit: I'm also up for suggestions for other artists or live sets worth listening to |

| I think it has something to do with all the Nintendo & Sega games we played when we were little kids. We spent hours listening to repeative simple electronic rhythms. Hearing them again as young adults, brings back happy memories :tongue2 |

pure minimal/detroit sounds like hawtin, luciano, villalobos blablabla is imo totally not made for homelistening imo. i myself even cant have it all day @ home, and i am pretty nuts about it. i enjoy it very much in "good" clubs tho, and it just totally works for me live and really blows you away under right conditions. ofcourse it depends alot on your taste too...
dont trade this with more electro- or techhouse genre.
it often sounds alike and djs like sasha, digweed or väth often mix it alot with proper minimal and lot of other house genres which makes it way more enjoyable for homelistening/live variety imo than the typical click-clack-minimal :) |

| I like minimal but only in small doses.....I can't listen to an entire set of minimal or it will drive me insane. Like Robbie said, it's good when mixed in with electro/tech/house to break up the set. Lawler is the perfect example of what I'm talking about.....the way he has been programming his sets with massive build ups, heavy bass lines, and twisted minimal is mental. I've noticed other DJ's starting to touch on the minimal side of things lately as well like Desyn.....so far I'm liking what I hear.:toothless |

| I think hearing minimal on anything but a great system is a waste. The music has such subtle intensity, that you really need to hear it in the right environment. Musically, in my opinion, it's somewhat challenging to play properly because the sounds are so abstract and spaced. That said, I don't see myself playing any full on minimal sets soon, but it definitely gets mixed in at times. |

| I cant listen to a set on ny ipod, but live Richie, Nic, and James just bring this energy taht u dont see with other genres, it has to be experienced live in color as far im concerned, its not like house and tarnce where you want to listen to the songs 100's of times, but when your there you feed off teh DJ's energy |

+1, you have to hear minimal on a nasty sound system, Cielo... also, I can only really get into it during day parties for some reason, ala Sunday School, Nocturnal Terrace...
Sets are very tough to get into when listening at home though, some good 'minimalish' type DJs are Gaiser, Gui Boretto, Radioslave, and Loco Dice IMO. |

i agree. didnt really see what the big fuss was over minimal, even when i gave it a chance and downloaded a bunch of sets. only recently got to hear it on a big soundsystem and started to notice the subtleties and the buildups..still dunno if i could listen to hours of the stuff but i definitely appreciate it a lot more.
then again, im probably fortunate to have had someone like richie spin the first minimal set i heard live..he turned the dancefloor into a pressure cooker, just building and building the intensity and unleashing massive basslines on the crowd |

i really hate this question. you either like it or not. and the term "minimal" is so over-used today.
i only thing i can say is give it a chance - go to some events and see what you like and don't like. it's as easy as that. |
