ableton EQ and midi controller annoying me
View this Thread in Original format

hi guys

i'm having a bit of a problem with my midi controller and abletons built in 3 way EQ...

because 12 o clock on the controllers knob is -/+0db but in ableton -/+0db is more like 4 o clock (im sure you know what i mean) whenever i map the knob it defaults to -14db in ableton

so 0db on the mixer is -14in ableton, because in ableton thats 12 o clock

does that make sense? and is there any way around it?

either you limit the max parameter to 0.0 db which doesn't leave any chance for "adding" treble for example...

or you can use some third party EQ (in vst format) ;)

do you know of any freeware EQ VSTs that support midi mapping?

i've tried making the max as 0 and not being able to add any db, but then 0db is when the knob is cranked all the way to the right :(

I dunno, but I think most of them would support mapping...only not in the sense you see that in abletons internal plugins...

you just have to click that little triangle and there you see all the parameters to map...if you can't get it read the manual or maybe if you beg and cry I'll make a screenshot...

actually can't recommend freeware plugs but there should be a plenty on kvraudio. I use waves Qx plugins...

then...is it that much a problem when the knob is all the way to the right? I mean...can't you just live with it?:D

i'll have a play now but theres having to assume 4 o is 0db on one mixer then flicking between that and my other mixer is gonna cause some confusion :p

edit - begs and cries, could you do a screenshot? thanks :)

I took the whole screen so you can see everything...

I used Waves Q3 but this way it works with any other EQ or any other plugin...the thingie where arrow points is to open these parameters...

then you click map...and look on the other circled things, which I hope are self-explanatory :)

have fun

nice one, i've got the waves plugin too and it works perfect, although -24 isnt really enough, but i'll do some searching around

Did you try EQ8? (built into ableton)

It looks a little complicated at first, but you can basically configure it however you want to emulate various mixer curves.

Not sure if it's Version 6 only?

But yes, the EQ3 sucks very badly.

If you're running version 6 just use Live's EQ8, it's completely customisable and I suspect it will also use less CPU then using a third-party VST.

neither EQ3 or EQ8 seem to have the button to show all the individual sliders like in the screenshot, and EQ18 is only -15db i think, although will play around with it tomorrow

i've set the waves plugin frequencies to the same as my mixer so switching between that and the midi controller shouldnt be too hard

thanks guys :)

BOOsTER
I bet you can automate EQ8 the same way as waves Qx plugs...

I see what you mean about the sliders, but if you're using EQ8 you can adjust how far the EQ goes by increasing the value in the 'scale' box. ;)
