Did anyone here used to like trance, before it went all cheesey?

Ya, I used to like trance, over 5 years ago, before Tiesto, Ferry, and the rest of the commercialized crew became all public.

Where can I find some decent trance or progressive trance sets these days... but WITHOUT the cheesey build-ups, drum-rolls, and cheesey vocals about love and ?

Counting on you guys for some suggestions! :gsmile:

I liked (and always will like EDM) from around that time too. I feel I registered on this site a good few years too late.

I think a small amount of cheese in some trance music is good, just to make it fun. As for where to find sets, I dunno. Usually I get them from other TA's offers.

what was the structure of the old trance tracks if there were no build ups or drum rolls?

Actually, Tiesto, Ferry, Armin van Buuren were quite big back then as well. Well maybe not Armin, but certaintly Tiesto and Ferry were big name trance DJs. Now they've gone more into electro/tech direction with some prog, house and some epic trance still. People talk about trance going cheese, and it largely has and they did play some cheesier music back around 2000/2001 as well, but listen to an old Tiesto set like Mystery Land or Trance Energy, and you'll find plenty of good melodic trance music from back in the day...alot of the same music he had on his "Magik" series. But if that's not what your referring to, the trance tracks from the later 90s and early 00s, then I guess your referring to more obscure, underground stuff or psy/goa or just the older stuff from the beginning of the 90s.

For suggestions, I'm personally more into melodic prog house like stuff on the "Toes In The Sand" and "Tilth" labels. This stuff is a good alternative to epic trance and some of it borders on progressive trance and breaks. Another suggestion is sets by John "00" Fleming or "J00F" as he's often called (and the name of his label) and prog-psy like music on Iboga & Digital Structures, or duos like Vibrasphere and Son Kite. That's what other people will recommend on here if your tired of the really mainstream stuff. I don't mind the more instrumental melodic stuff, like I mentioned..from the late 90s and early 00s, cause that's when I got into trance and the sound that I got into intially.

I'm trying to remember the names of all the tracks I used to listen to, but it's been so many years, I can't remember. Basically, it's not like the trance these days where it makes u feel like u should bust out glow-sticks and throw your hands in the air.

Hope that makes sense. I'm sure a lot of you who don't listen to trance anymore becuase of the cheesey/commercialized factor know what I'm talking about! :)

There were builds and drum rolls. I've listened to some of the older stuff from Cosmic Baby, Visions of Shiva, Age Of Love, Art of Trance, Cygnus X and Dance2Trance. The biggest difference, was their more repetitive nature, the build ups were MUCH longer and more effects were added to give the tracks a hypnotic feel. But they still had breakdowns (not quite as dramatic or long, a bit spacier) and build ups and melodies. Those who say the older stuff did not have breakdowns are misleading themselves. They just weren't as long, and not every track in a DJ set used them. Longer build ups, shorter breakdowns were more common in the older style.

Cosmic Baby - The Space Track

This is a classic trance track from 1992 by Cosmic Baby. To me, it doesn't sound that different from the later stuff, just more hypnotic effects with a spacier breakdown (listen to it at 2:11 into the track). Essentially..it's early progressive, melodic trance that is slower and less dramatic than epic has become over the years.

Get it.

trance has been cheesy all of the time. There's just been periods when there was more to it than just that. To say that back in 99/2000 there wasn't as much cheese as there is today shows an insane amount of stupidity and a lack of understanding of it. I would say more but we've already had one of spirit5's essays and he has seemingly more time to write than the rest of us

I am just am a fast typer and deep thinker. You guys should give up the "Spiri5 writes long ass replies" thing, I just write comprehensive posts and don't always treat each post like a simple IM or tex message, but a more thorough post. Usually I'm on here when I have a little time to write....very rarely am I on here when I have a bunch of stuff to do, and considering i'm not in school right now and don't work full-time, I do have more time on my hands to write long-ass replies/essays/novels whatever you want to call them. So it's true...I do have more time on my hands.

Fixed.

I guess psytrance and djs like Nicholas Bennison and J00F would fit the bill. I haven't much gotten into that sound, though Bennison has some nice tracks.
