| Whether or not house is more mainstream now or then is not the issue. The issue is that he has a problem with Miami. Seven years ago in Miami you could head out to numerous clubs to hear any styles of edm you wanted. Now that are only a few clubs left and they play reallly commercial house so they can keep the jet-set crowd and keep the bottle service going. Trust me, I went to the main afterhours- beautiful people, but honestly the music was something out of millenium Club in Montreal- all cheese. In other words, there are few venues where you can really hear original edm, and where the genre can be further developed and exposed to the masses. Also, the problem in downtown miami with weapons and crackheads and all that is really ridiculous. To say that Toronto has the same problems, as suggested earlier in this thread, is ridiculous. The areas around the edm clubs and bars have no where near the problems that exist in downtown miami in terms of guns and crime and people on the street that intimidate you. Furthermore, there are numerous venues in Toronto that have been continually fostering the edm genre for quite sometime, as evidenced by the loads of local talent and regular headliners that come to Toronto. With the exception of WMC, this cannot be said for Miami, Hence Danny T has had enough and is pulling the plug on Twilo. Although Miami is a great place to party, be with beautiful people, and get down with the craziness, NYC is the better place to really hear edm if you are really into the music. |

Well, it is better than Miami if you want variation in talent and genre. I spent a weekend in Manhattan in January- went to Pacha NYC for James Zab and then to Sullivan Room for JOOF. JOOF tore it up, but overall I was not overly impressed with the weekend as a whole. Of course we all know Montreal has the heavyweight title for edm city in North America, as confirmed by askmen.com |

There is no doubt in my mind that advances in technology (i.e. file sharing software like Napster which wasn't released until 1999, increased storage capcity, faster internet bandwidth, the release of itunes in 2001, ipods, beatport whch was released in 2004, internet radio, etc.) have make EDM more accessible and listened to by more people around the world. These advances were not in place in 1998-2000. Not even close. There are certaily more DJs today that there were 7-10 years ago.

Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, etc... is also more accessible then it was from 1998-2000.
just because it's more convenient doesn't mean more people are listening to it.
The one are where it is more mainstream though is the score for television shows, movies and television commercials! I'll see a commercial for global news with DnB in the background followed by a tooth paste commercial with house music. |

I agree, and well said. Miami really is in another league when it comes to ridiculous shady club going on, the note he makes about security crackdowns is the most relevant imo.
Although I'm glad (and entertained by the fact that) he had the balls to say a lot of those things, a lot of said ranting doesn't sit right with me. I don't really understand his attack on the commercially succesful songs, totally misdirected. So he's sick of hearing "Flashdance", lol I'm sick of hearing Celine Dion, I don't make the connection with our scene (or miami's for that matter) |
