Image, peer pressure, rebellion... I remember back in 7th grade more than half the class smoked and I was seen as one of the weirdoes because I didn't want anything to do with it. Nowadays I do enjoy cigars though. Just not cigarettes.

Smoking, fair enough , smells bad, etc etc.

If you're trying to tell me you wouldn't see an absolutely awesome girl who lights up a cigarette 5 times a day you are lying to yourself.

It not just one reason behind it. Many people start because it feels good and keep it going because of social pressure. Other people start because of social pressure and then keep going because they like. Stopping smoking has withdrawal effects, amongst them depression. A lot of people that are prone to depression also take up smoking because it masks they're depression for a while.

There are many reasons to this. I think the peer pressure one is the most ridiculous of them. But for many people smoking does calm them down and make them feel better. That instant gratification effect is what keeps them coming back.

Pure stupidity, nothing more, nothing less.

I smoke casually, it goes well with some things, namely drinking. It can also help relieve stress despite people alluding to the contrary. I just do not get addicted. I never buy my own, I always bum, and I have stayed unaddicted for years doing that -_-

They do it for the same reason I pointed out in that drinking thread a few days ago. Rebellion.

It's off-limits to them until they're 18, everybody and their second cousin says you shouldn't do it. If they do it, it's their way of rebelling.

Kids these days... back in my time, kids would rebel learning Russian!

Well you certainly wouldn't want to do anything to put yourself at an increased risk of cancer, would you? You'd be much better of avoiding the cancer, so you can die of heart disease instead. Of course, it could end up being a moot point - there's always the possibility you'd die in a fire or a tornado or just a car accident long before any of that became remotely relevant.

Or, if you were really lucky, maybe you'd get an extra 10 or 15 years out of the deal and live long enough to get Alzheimer's and just for some extra fun lets add some severe incontinence. I'm sure at that point you would really be glad you avoided smoking so that you could live a while longer, if you could remember making the decision, that is.

Since we're agreed that the be-all, end-all of life is to avoid death for the longest possible amount of time, here's a few other simple rules you can live by in addition to not smoking:

1. Don't go anywhere near a car or any other form of automotive vehicle. In other words, never leave your home.
2. Eat a strict diet based entirely on the nutritional value of each food, never deviating from it for any reason.
3. Never, ever, have sex. It's probably best if you don't even think about it.
4. Make sure that you see a doctor at the first sign of anything that could be remotely symptomatic of a life-threatening condition, no matter how improbable, including: fatigue, pain of any kind, mild itching, headache, indigestion, et cetera. Of course, thanks to rule #1 you'll have to pay them to come to you - I hope that work from home scam worked out really well for you.

Yeah, that's what did it for me.

I was like "yep S M O K I N G is pretty cool"

And then the Nazis were like "yeah, it causes cancer dude"

And I was like "wtf Nazis"

I smoke socially and when I drink, because I still get that little head rush which is a nice complement to alcohol. I don't consciously perceive it as any form of rebellion.
