Clubs told to close for up to 2 months as island club politics ignites for another season...
This morning (Friday) news broke in Ibiza´s leading paper, Diario de Ibiza, that the Government has closed down three of the island´s best loved institutions: Bora Bora and Amnesia for one month each, effective immediately; and DC10 for two months, effective immediately.
The Government says its actions are a necessary response to reports from local police and Guardia Civil of the use and sale of drugs in these clubs during the 2005/2006 seasons.
The Government admits there is no precedent for shutting down clubs in Ibiza on these grounds, but it alleges drug use in these clubs created dangerous situations and damaged Ibiza´s tourism industry.
They also published figures indicating 450 people were caught in possession of drugs during last weekend´s opening parties, and that one hospital dealt with 11 people who had symptoms of drug intoxication.
In light of the fact more than 20,000 clubbers poured into Space and DC10 alone for the opening (not to mention the thousands who attended two parties at Privilege) those numbers seem like slim justification for such a radical and economically devastating move.
Ibiza makes the vast majority of its money during the summer season, and closing three of its biggest tourist attractions will have a terrible impact both on the seasonal workers, who travel from around the world, and the locals who rely on the industry for their main income.
The harsh decision also fails to reflect the reality that, while there are always some drugs in clubs the experience of Ibiza for a vast majority of visitors is a safe and positive one.
All the clubs provide security, medical aid, chillout areas, etc and even in the midst of crowds of thousands at, say, Amnesia, it is rare to see any serious trouble – either from over-indulgence or aggressive behaviour.
As ever, rumours and suggestions of politicking and bad blood are rife, but at the moment there is no real information beyond what is laid out in the paper.
Everyone in Ibiza – and those planning holidays here – will be hoping for a reprieve, as will the owners, promoter, workers, and DJs whose livelihoods rely on the clubs. | SOURCE |

MAJOR MAJOR bad news obv if it all goes down.
Having said that, i'd be surprised if these 3 venues really to get shut down for so long. |

The military/police mean business.. last year driving home from San An to Ibiza town we were held up at a check point on the highway.
Some of the craziest s**t I have seen.. Guards with machine guns, Dogs, and at the end they had guys holding the spikes to throw in the road if anyone tried to run it..
Don't know if they were looking for someone specific or if it was common practice..
The only reason we did not get pulled over is because we were in a cab. They were doing very through searches of all who were pulled over.
jon jon.. you were the first person I thought of when I read this.. I hope it all gets sorted out.
It is too bad they can't realize it is the drunk Brits, looking for a cheap holiday, who are wrecking things.
It is really destroying things for those who see Ibiza as electronic music's Mecca.. |

I'm sorry, but clubs *are* Ibiza's tourism. Without the legendary clubs and parties that Ibiza is known for, there is no real reason for tourists to visit over any other destination with a nice beach. |

That's what I thought as well..
It is not the case.. Ibiza is like what the Caribean is to us.
Also, it is like Florida to British seniors. I had my eyes opened when I went. |

oh !
from what i've heard from people living there this summer, cops searches everyone in Amnesia last night, making 450 arrests of both residents and tourists. |
correction. they pulled aside and strip-searched 450 people at SPACE opening. supposedly bora bora will be shut down too, and there is talk about Space as well
there are other resorts on the Island that cater to families etc etc, but majority of the tourists are clubbers. |

Strip-searched!? Holy unreasonable search and seizure Batman! Although I can't seem to find any search and seizure provisions in the EU charter. Weird! |

Shocking, and here I thought that the EU really had people's civil liberties at heart.
LOL @ the comments (from other posters) about "Clubs ARE Ibiza's tourism". Because you said so, right? And people say that Americans are arrogant... oh those poor souls, they can only survive economically because we pay the outrageous cover and drink prices at their clubs!
The comparison to Florida was perfect; Miami has several popular and successful clubs but they're hardly keeping the whole city afloat. Most sufficiently big touristy cities also have a nightlife. Europe may be a theme park to you, but try talking to people who actually live and work there for once and you'll hear a very different story. |
