RIchie Hawtin & DT Review (pg. 2)

I got there like @ 2:30, Dennis was really rocking it but everybody was waiting for Richie. I really liked his set, but once Danny went on, I wanted to throw something @ him, it was the worst that I've ever heard him play. I used to like DT a lot, but this was a joke and I will NEVER pay to get into another of those guido-infested parties, and to top it off, with bad music. Especially @ Pacha.
God knows how hard I tried to get into it @ around 8 am, I guess Danny doesn't quite have it anymore.

LOL
What always kinda bothers me here though is that always the opener is boring for people here. Dennis took it like a champ and played till 3:30 (OMG- peak time!) and ROCKED it. Wouldn't surprise me if nobody is familiar with his name but at the same time speak of Twilo as home.

And Danny is too old for this bull, he needs to start playing opening sets. He just couldn't seem to keep up with the nastiness from earlier. Age is a bitch.

Ive seen Dennis Rodgers open up a few times. He is pretty good imo when he opens up in a big room, especially back at Arc. Danny was good but fell off once his fan base got larger. I would say around late 2004 after Arc closed is when he pretty much got this ego of "Im in demand so I will play whatever, whenever, to whome ever I want and thats the way it will be." From a DJ point of view, he def. threw down some sick tracks, but his lack of progression in his sets is what makes him suck, especially when hes DJing peak time and throws some bull track on that makes u go WTF :conf: Its like get off the mic and just play a consistent set. Last I saw him was for Carl Cox when he came on at 5 Am and played minimal. I WAS BORED TO DEATH. But from what I hear, he does this to get the guido crowd to go home and the remaining ppl at 11 AM is who he decides to play the good stuff for. Personally, I refuse to go to his party and then wait til 11 AM for it to "GET GOOD".

have to say that i was disappointed with richie's set (and not just because he didn't start until 3:15 or so). it might have been the crowd, but he played a very housey/tech-house set with very little banging techno - he had his moments when he was banging it out, but just wasn't feeling most of what he was spinning last night. he was layering on loops and (his usual) and laying on the base when appropriate, but compared to his set really hard, banging set in LA last weekend, this set was just medicore for me.

also, this is really the last time i'm going to pacha - the crowd wasn't too bad, but still it was bad enough to turn me off

I know that is his usual but for a regular person that listens to tehchno and doesnt get to see Mr. Hawtin all that often is a treat for anyone imo. Not alot of techno dj's can do what he does but then again not every techno dj has a custom built mixer or final scratch to make some insane sounds that he's capable of. Yeah he had his some dull moments in his set where it was a bit bland, but from a dj's point of view if you banged it out for how many ever hours it starts sounding the same. Then again I don't do drugs and never will so I guess I won't understand from that aspect of it.

do i have higher standards for richie? yes

why? because i've seen him do in' mind-blowing sets and when you get a medicore set from him i feel somewhat ripped off because i know what he can do. his set here in NYC was medicore from his set last saturday in LA when he tore it apart. and i think he did the best he could based on the crowd - one look at the crowd and he probably knew that most of the ppl were not techno nerds and he played more plain vanilla stuff that would appeal to the guido infested crowd.

oh yeah - i guess richie's flight was re-routed to philly and drove up to nyc that's why he was on so late.
