@dcctnycprincess
agreed with you, but what else did you expect at pacha?
the crowd had to be like 90% male also
I also got the feeling that tenaglia was trying to thin out the crowd at the beginning, but man it was pretty god awful for a while..
tenaglia playing the nova dream sequence - dream 8 at like 11 am was awesome |

It was like two events in one, kickass Hawtin Techno and then boring, flat, DT. Hawtin, who showed up late cause his fight was delayed tore Pacha apart. Pobably made lots of new techno fans out of the guidos who showed up for DT. Place was going nuts for every track he threw down. Considering that this event had a "Hawtin vs DT Deathmatch" kind of hype, everyone couldn't wait to see what Danny would bring to the table to upstage Richie's brilliant set. After hearing nothing but accolades for DT's Twilo, Miami WMC set, which was supposedly all techno, I couldn't wait either. I'd been a DT fan since his Tunnel days.
Eventually Danny showed up and took over for Richie. He actually began by spinning one of Richie's tracks. Unfortunately, that was probably the best part of Dany's set (as far as I know cause I left early). Danny followed up by bringing the energy level WAY down and spinning boring, lifeless techno transgressing into what sounded like tribal with the bass turned down enough that the amateurs would think that it was techno as well. After an hour or two of that kind of mediocrity, a bunch of us couldn't take it anymore and left so that at least DT wouldn't wash out or positive memories from earlier in the night, when Hawtin came to Danny's house and made him his bitch.
Had Richie not been there, maybe DT's set wouldn't have been so bad by sheer contrast. DT spun a typical, if this time unremarkable DT set. It's almost as if Danny was too much of a big shot to even be there for any of Richie's set. Had he heard what Richie brought to own, maybe he would have tried harder. It was almost as if Danny thought we were all so clueless about music and so blindly up his ass that he didn't even have to try, that we'd LOVE whatever crap he spun. The best way I could sum up DT's set is by calling it "insulting." |

Seems like varied reviews from Friday night. Doesn't surprise me when you have two very different DJs spinning on a night in a club that can be either the best or the worst depending on where you are located in the venue.
My personal review is this:
Dennis Rodgers was really good. I thought he did an excellent job warming up and I give him even more credit since he didn't expect to play longer. I hadn't heard him in a long time and I liked what he was playing.
And then Hawtin. HOLY . I liked Richie Hawtin before but he was never my favorite DJ to see live. I usually prefer his sets as background music at afterhours; they are usually a bit too mellow for me to really get into at a club. Well, Saturday morning that "like" went to "LOVE". I mean DAMN! Talk about HIGH ENERGY! He was so on fire and I was throughly impressed. By no means did I expect him to suck but I was NOT expecting such a.. a... massive TECHNO EXPLOSION! Hahaha, I don't know how to describe it. HE ROCKED MY WORLD! I was on my feet and dancing for most of his set. So much fun! And believe me, these days it's not so easy impress me or blow my mind. I've become more and more jaded as the years go by. I don't know if Richie was just "feelin' it" or was purposely banging it out because he was opening up against DT and wanted to have a little show down. Whatever it was, it worked.
On to Danny. First off, I didn't think Danny's 'speech' was too long and I thought it was quite appropriate. He thanked Richie for making it to the gig even though he had flight complications and he mentioned how much he admires and respects Richie and how happy he was to play with him. He also wished him a happy birthday and we all sang happy bday to Richie. I thought it was really cool.
Although both Richie and Danny kept me dancing, I will say that Richie's set was far more impressive and exciting than DT's. That is partially because I've heard some amazing sets from Danny that topped this last one and partially because I almost always dance my ass off when I hear him. I have not done the same with Richie's sets. But that's just my own opinion.
That being said, Danny's set was still great and he played some awesome tracks and banged it out for a while so I ended up staying right through to the end - even though I had NOT planned on doing so. All in all, I had a blast and it was really great to have a solid night of dancing my ass off - it just doesn't happen that often anymore for me.
We left when it was over (around 1:30 I think?) and went to Vynl for lunch. And then of course I was a complete zombie for the rest of the weekend and slept so late today that I am still awake at 3 fkin am to be posting this.
BUT IT - IT WAS WORTH IT! :D |

I am soooo glad we left before DT came on….sounds like I did not miss much.
I am a house head who is growing to love techno I came up to Pacha just to see Hawtin b/c I know how well respected he is and I love a few of his sets esp. his Live at Mystery Land set. I can understand if you know a lot of techno and have seen Hawtin a few times why you would say it was not his best stuff but for me Hawtin was well worth the drive up from Philly and he made a few new fans on Friday.
My feet and cavs still hurt..... |
