All tracks in ableton are synced to a master tempo at start. So that fader is proabably there to control master tempo.

Doubt it.

As long as you have an open-source input to your own mixer/program you have endless capabilities. A group of devs have already created a program called LiveAPI which runs on windows and python that allows you to fully hack ableton and add anything you want if you have the scripting knowledge.

As well as the fact that this controller is custom to Sasha's needs, he can add anything he wants, whenever he wants, however he wants. Capabilities are endless, I don't see a public controller coming close to the capabilities of being able to edit and manage your own box.

Im going to have to check out LiveAPI. Will give me something to do.

Just because you can beatmatch perfectly doesn't mean you're going to affect the crowd in any way to actually enjoy the night they paid for. :stongue:

Ableton does nothing but sync beats. I don't understand this dilemma, people blame everything they possibly can just because it isn't the traditional form of DJ'ing.

It's creativity that comes to terms really with Ableton, you have access to so much more tools than with traditional DJ'ing. You can't stop technology from moving forward, either you move forward or stay behind with something you feel more comfortable with. I believe that's the reason people switch to Ableton and digital in the first place, it's ease of use and options to make the crowd move and enjoy the night.

Wouldn't be sweet to get a hold of that little gray box next to the controller? Quick, somebody steal it and give it to me! hehehehe

This is exactly it - people call it "cheating" simply because it doesn't suffer from the drawbacks of old technology. Although to a certain extent I agree that if a DJ using tools like Ableton isn't doing much that you couldn't do otherwise and they're just getting a bit more time to sit down and have a drink between tracks, then they should have their pay docked.

I think it all comes from this naive idea of 'DJing' being synonymous with 'mixing' - which is also why there are so many e DJs out there! Just cos they can beatmatch they think they're a good DJ. In fact maybe I'm being a complete hypocrite here and I fall into that bracket myself - you never really know what other people think! :p

I've been thinking recently about how it's mostly non-Holland DJs that are trying new things, mainly UK and German ones.
