This is where i will be starting up pretty soon here. Check this guys out, they have top notch studios in downtown LA.

www.iconcollective.com
www.learn2produce.com

This is basically a school that can create a custom program to fit each student according to what they want out of it.

and i recommend santa monica, very nice place.

Coming from the UK, I would not get to excited about the club scene here in LA.

Thanks so much for your input everyone! Looks like I'm moving to the right bit of the world.....

Miss Julia, thanks for that - I know of westside rentals as I used them last time to find an apartment and while they deal with more expensive (than Craig's list) apartments they were very good. Will check out craigs list though....

What's redondo beach like? I just worry it's a bit far to get to hollywood(?) if my schools' there (not too up for 3hr jams).

Medina - What's MI?

MoBreakz - Let me know what conclusion you come to. I've checked with the AES (Audio Engineers Society) and LARS production program is recognised by them (good sign).

LARS website is http://www.recordingcareer.com/
Looks amazing but that can just be all gloss......

xenpro - I didn't realise that SAE had spread to LA too! I have very mixed feelings about the SAE colleges as I have friends that went to various SAE's in different countries with very varied results. Some people from the London one came out very well versed and others were just complete muppets. It also hindered their careers as some really pro studios see SAE being for "kids" or wannabe DJ's, not potential engineers or producers.

djjoshuaallen - the iconcollective looks to be a marketing/communications company? The learn 2 produce thing looks interesting but I doubt they will be able to arrange the visa as the courses are not structured enough. It looks good if you want to brush up on your personal knowledge but the main reason I am doing it is that I want a proper qualification that is recognised (and I want to live by the beach for while too.)

Don't get me wrong - The UK has so many nights on at the moment but it's so polarised - either way too commercial in terms of the club felling like a sheep pen where they are only concerned with what will get people through the doors, or really really underground (and my days of standing in disused aircraft hangars/warehouses with toilets that a make a concentration camp look like the mandarin oriental were over a long time ago - even if they were fun.)

Wondering about setting up a club night over there... How difficult would this be? Anyone interested in combining some UK sounds with LA flavour?

i commuted from redondo to hollywood for almost 2 years, it was bad but not 3 hours bad.. worst id ever have was like 90mns (with a bad accident) so its totally possible.

www.mi.edu it's another competeing recording school. Its got a great reputation in the studios in hollywood! before i was graduating from school! i just came to find out working in a recording studio wasnt what i wanted to do AFTER i finished all the courses haha. It has definetly helped my electronica production however!

Even though Redondo is nice, don't move there. Just move as close as possible to whatever school you're going to go to. Traffic sucks in LA.

Sorry mate, but London is IONS beyond LA as far as a nice place to live. L.A. is a total dump, imo... It's has it's bright spots, but overall, the place is a filthy, nasty mess.

So, i just moved here in Jan after attending an audio engineering school in Phoenix. www.cras.org

All I can say is that you really do need to have your ducks in a row. Don't expect the Audio industry to throw you any bones. It's an extremely difficult profession to succeed in and the success rate is very low. So, be wary of websites for schools trying to paint a picture of an industry that will welcome you with open arms and pay you good money, because it ain't happening. I researched all the major schools in the U.S. before deciding on the Conservatory because their price was right, the length of the program was good for me, since I had already completed University, and, Phoenix was an affordable place to live while I was in school.

I decided not to go the traditional audio route because the recording industry is a total fuk these days. I went into Film Post Production and was quickly hit with the reality that in order to have ANY level of success, you will basically have to slave yourself to any job you can get, paying you any ridiculous amount of money, and love every minute of it.

Now, all this was put to me the same way in school. Most of my instructors were L.A. veterans who had engineered major studio albums, won grammy awards, and worked on major feature films. So, I knew what to expect and I picked LA because there are only 3 major cities where you can expect to jump into the industry: NYC, Nashville, and L.A.

So, my advice to you is just be solid in what you want to do and pick a school/program that fits your needs and be ready to do anything and everything that you have to, to succeed... :)

Let's do a switch.. you move here and I'll move there....lol

PM me if you have any questions or anything... :toothless

I had to Google it, thank you.

I'm planning on going to school also and I've done a bit of research myself. The reason why I'm leaning towards SAE is that they actually have a diploma program which gets you a Bachelor's degree. You can also go all the way through with a Master's program. Thing is, you'd have to relocate to a major European campus or Australia's Byron Bay. I love traveling, so I'm not closed to the idea. Plus Byron Bay's facilities are just mind-blowing.

As far as "combining some UK sounds with LA flavor..." sounds enticing!

When I was out in the UK, I checked out Point Blank and a few other places, but that one really stuck to mind. Did you check that one out?I wasn't impressed with the SAE there. Plus, the added cost of my arms and legs for living there made making a decision much easier.

Yah seriously cutthroat. Like most of the entertainment industry its more of who you know than what you know in the beginning. You have to have other means to support yourself to make a real run for it, to able slave it. Im trying to upgrade my production and recording skills so I can record albums for some smaller artists I know that will pay $5-$10k an album, just some side quests and improve my productions of EDM/Hip Hop, since sound quality and some methodology is whats holding me back.

I wanted to move to L.A too from Belgium. If I moved, I would consider Irvine, what do u think of it ?

Irvine's nice. It's mostly a commercial city, but has lots of nice places around to live. It's pretty laid back overall, and it's VERY close to the beach. The UCI campus is located there, so there's a huge student population around too.

It depends what you're looking for though. If you're looking for crazy nightlife, clubs, parties, Irvine is definitely not the place for that. The only thing that would really even come close to that for EDM fans is Tentation on Thursday nights. What's nice about Irvine though is that it's right in the middle of San Diego and LA so you're just an hour away from two major Southern California cities ;)

Why LA anyway?
