Once again, thaks to everyone for the advice an if this is indicative of how warm people are in LA I think I'm on to good thing.......:)
I've looked and think redondo is just a bit too far as the schools I'm looking at are all in W.LA or hollywood.
A1C - Thanks for the offer! ;) Does it come with a free green card?
I'm not worried about having to slave it to get somewhere - I slave it already in London and even though I have to admit I do get paid well, the cost of living (rent, food, travel) means London is just not good value right now. You end up working all gods hours to pay rent and travel to and from work.
djillicit - SAE has a very mixed rep. The London one IMO is e. A lot of real wannabe's and I don't reckon the degree program is worth the paper it's written on becuase you can get full degree from a proper UK university (i.e. 3 Year Music technology degree etc.) so it makes the SAE one look like a toy course.
I actually studied at Point Blank and it was very, very good, probably the best in the UK and they really try to push the careers of their pupils. The only thing is their courses are quite limited and they still have thet "DJ school" stigma, which real industry emnployers won't take seriously. It's great to top up your own personal knowledge though and they teach very well there.
Why LA? I think DJMANU put it best, but hteres more to it; my girlfriend has a job offer out there and I had such a great epxerience when I was there a few years back (for nearly a year), that I've always wanted to go back, especially now as my career path is music producing and it along with london, Miami, NYC and nasville are the major music cities.
If anyone os considering to move abroad to go to Producing/enginering school, the best educational experience I have ever had , was the Harris institute in Toronto. It is the most well taught, intense, friendly, and in depth school I have ever had the forune to step foot in. I gurantee that anyone who goes there will be blown away - but's it's hardcore: 40+hours weeks and lessons until 10pm some days. |

Hm, so you went to Point Blank and want to go to a similar school again in LA? Not sure I understand...

Oh most definitely! I personally LOVED Miami, and if I had to pick one US city to live in, it would be that! Then again, the grass is always greener on the other side, so I don't see LA as I would in a visitor's eyes!

So Point Blank AND Harris Institute? Now I'm really confused... have you actually attended all these schools?? |

I love Miami weather too but L.A has more economic opportunities, Miami is more dangerous and people are poorer and rude ... |

DJILLICIT - let me clarify.....
Went to the Harris Institute in T.O. to get a proper education in engineering and producing. The course was simply awesome but due to various things like cash flow shortage, visa "issues" etc., I had to miss the last (3rd) part of the course. A lot of people in my class actually did that because the last part was much less theory and more about doing in the studios and most people said "i'll just go and get get a job in a studio to do that, I don't need to pay another $3-4k CAD to do it", so I didn't feel that bad. The only thing that really sucked in hindsight is I didn' get a diploma.
Got back the UK and started working for the largest pro audio shop in europe, learnt lots about all european kit (obviously very different kit available in N.America) became Manager of said shop...but hardly ever had time to play with kit or software. and that was the only thing that was lacking about harris - maybe they did all of that in the last part but the focus was about teaching you the theory of sound, and this being about 6 years ago, didnt ahve a big emphasis on software.....so off to point blank a couple of years later to learn really only about audio software. Really good again but the diploma from that is fairly meaningless and I also feel there have been a lot of developments since then (4 years ago).
Anyway back to LA.....my woman and I are getting sick of living in London (or should I say slaving ourselves for good money and watching it dissapear for no good reason). A school in LA is a good way to brush up on modern developments, make contacts in the LA music scene both through the school faculty and alumni, most importantly get a visa for a decent period and finally get a proper diploma, which is something that i have felt has (if only slightly) held me back.
I'm hearing good things about the musicians institute - Anyone know anything?
Does no-one have any experience with LARS?
Thanks again everyone for all your input!:) |

Ok so, I've narrowed it down to either the Musician's Institute and The Los Angeles Recording School.
Has anyone got any experience with these?
From my research, MI is long established and famous for their performance based programs (GuitarInstitue or Technology etc.) but they only do a six month course (long way to come for only 6 months).
LARS is really glossy and looks really hi tech and well equipped but gloss doesn't really mean anything.
Also I'm hearing scary sht about clubs cosing at 2am. I used to be leaving the house to go out at that time. Say it aint so!
Any help on the school greatly appreciated.

I was driving down the street by my house the other day and saw that LARS school you wanted to go to, lol. If you wanna go to that school, you better find an apartment in Hollywood area.
Only the hip hop clubs close at 2am. Avalon closes like after 7am. Vangaurd closes at 4am. |
