Haha, it's true. I know because I saw him trying to pay dudes to suck their dicks outside the Guvernment after a party one night. I think it was Halloween. |

That is such a ing copout. There's ALWAYS a choice to be made, ALWAYS a chance to be accountable for your life and your actions...your success or failure.
Those people obviously had problems you couldn't see from the outside, and meth is just their scapegoat/crutch/whatever. |
This is not true at all. Most addicts dont become addicts because of problems in their lives. They start out as casual users when things are going fine. Then they continue to use and are addicted before anything bad starts to happen. It is only once problems arise that the addiction becomes apparent, but it was there from the beginning. Addiction has nothing to do with who a person is. It has roots in many different areas including genetics, biology, circumstance, and others. And the whole definition of addiction is that there is NOT a choice anymore. Whether you want to believe it or not, once someone is addicted all choice in the matter goes out the window. Do you honestly think that people are CHOOSING meth over their children? That is not the case at all, though it is impossible to understand completely unless you have been through it yourself. I think that it is a real reflection on how misunderstood addiction is that someone in the medical field, such as yourself, has so little understanding of the nature of addiction. These misconceptions are a large part of the reason that addiction is still so rampant in the world. If this is ever to change, people need to set aside their preconcieved notions and allow themselves to be educated. Just because YOU can't understand how a substance can take away all choice and control in a person's life does not mean that it doesn't happen. |

I still think it's a copout. |

Thank you for proving my point and clinging to ignorance. |

| It's like smoking. A friend of mine was telling me that out of all the cigarettes he smokes in a day (I forget the number, nothing high...I think it's 6 or 7) he really only enjoys and chooses to smoke one after he eats. All the other ones he smokes literally hurt him, he coughs, his throat feels like and most of the time he can't finish it. But he just can't help to smoke. |

Some people unfortunately have a predisposition towards addiction end up realizing it when they're completely ed. "Copout" or not its the reason behind a lot of junkies getting so messed up.
I suppose we can relate this to you: Some people have a predisposition towards being an ignorant twat. |

| Jenny, i can see where you're coming from... but have you ever dealt with an addiction? do you have an addictive personality? would you say that it's a cop-out when an alcoholic can't stop drinking? imo it's no different, really... and i think it's a LOT harder to understand what it's like unless you've been there. |

This is very true. Its like trying to relate to a suicidal person if you've never even been depressed. |

For the record I DO understand a lot more about addiction than it appears in this thread.
I'm not arguing that some people are predisposed to addiction, but that shouldn't be used as an excuse to not work harder to stay clean/sober. That to me, is a copout. |
