This is exactly the problem. There needs to be downward pressure on prices. Things are way too expensive right now. |
Bell & Telus merging may very well lead to decreased prices; economies of scale. |

Do you seriously think Industry Canada would allow them to merge without significant price controls?
My point stands.
If Telus & Bell merge - they won't be able to piss-a-penny without the CRTC approving it.
And further it would more than likely allow for the entry of foreign capital to further reduce pricing in the local, mobile and television markets. |

Given that half of the CRTC staff are ex-Bell employees, I don't think they'll have too much trouble getting approval.
As if the CRTC would allow Bell to get away with the things they already get away with if Bell didn't already have significant pull. CRTC oversight is worse than nothing - Bell already got them to kill DirecTV in Canada just so they could push their useless ExpressVu.
The CRTC has only one guiding principle that they will stay true to regardless of industry pressure, and that is keeping American companies with superior service offerings out of the Canadian market. |

Well Clearnet was bought by Telus in 2000 (hence all the animals in Telus marketing campaigns).
Then you have Fido which was bought by Rogers a couple of years ago.
There's Bell...
and Videotron who uses Rogers network at this moment but wants to get its own spectrum and compete with the other 3 or soon to be 2, Videotron has been very agressive pricing wise and very vocal on wanting to get that remaining spectrum so it can bring prices down even further while using its own network. |

I've been a Telus client for about 6 years now... currently stuck on that last 2 years of a 3 year contract. I can't stand how it always seems like Telus is trying to screw over their current subscribers.... every time I see an ad... the minutes for new subscribers are always better than any plans for the current subscribers... it sux. I pay $40+ per month for my half of a shared plan with my bro' and we get almost nothing for it.
I'm itching to get on to Virgin Mobile... all features free... cheaper rates based on when I actually use the phone... way more enticing.
after this news... I'm hoping that Telus gets cheaper, goes GSM & competes with virgin mobile... otherwise I'm out.
I read an article in the newspaper the other day about how Canada is getting RIPPED OFF BADLY in terms of wireless service prices... the US is making wireless SO affordable it makes our wireless market look like absolute CRAP. |

CRTC will allow a merger if they permit foreign companies to enter the market to offset the new monopoly.
IF prices go down it will be because of increased competition with the foreign and not because Bellus is forwarding its new found profits to the consumers... And what about the the 10,000s of jobs lost?
If any, could you give us an example of a merger that brought prices down to consumers??? I think it will be a hard to find example. |

I can see how this could be good for investors of either company, but this is bad news for wireless customers around Canada. We already have the highest wireless rates in the OECD. If Bell and Telus merge, it certainly isn't going to cause prices to drop... |
don't use colors in you text..it's freaking annoying:gsmile: |

We don't need an "all Canadian" merger; what we need is more foreign competition. Let Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, and T-Mobile compete with Bell, Rogers, and Telus. That's the only way to improve service and prices in Canada. |
+1 ..
might as well throw in Vodafone, O2, Orange, and the like into the lot while you're at it..
i smell telecom protectionist policies at work .. should we be surprised?

TELUS today announced that it has elected not to submit an offer to acquire BCE as part of the strategic review process announced by BCE on April 17, 2007.
The inadequacies of BCE’s bid process did not make it possible for TELUS to submit an offer. |
